Friars Softball Sweeps Senior Day Non-Conference Doubleheader Against Tarleton State

Seven seniors were honored in today’s senior day ceremony.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team swept a Senior Day doubleheader against Tarleton State (31-20, 13-8 WAC) on Friday, April 25 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars earned a 6-4 victory in the opener and followed with a 2-1 win in game two. With the sweep, Providence improved to 22-25 overall (11-10 BIG EAST). Sophomore Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.) paced the Friars in game one, finishing 3-3 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored. Senior Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) also contributed two RBI. In game two, senior Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) led the way in the circle, pitching a complete game while allowing just two hits and one earned run, and recording four strikeouts.

#55 Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) 

GAME ONE NOTES 
  • The Tarleton opened the scoring with a solo home run by Austin Germaine in the top of the first inning. 
  • The Friars responded in the second, as Peterson delivered a two-run single to give Providence a 2-1 lead heading into the third. 
  • Eichten followed with the team's second two-run single of the game, extending the Friars' advantage to 4-1 in the third inning. 
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Sebastian executed a bunt that allowed Aldrich to score and push the lead to 5-1. 
  • Germaine recorded her second solo home run of the day for Tarleton State in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 5-2. 
  • Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) provided an insurance run for the Friars in the bottom half of the sixth with an RBI single to bring home Sebastian. 
  • The Texans added two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Friars held on to secure a 6-4 victory. 
  • Graduate student Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) pitched a complete game for Providence, striking out five batters while allowing just three hits and two earned runs across 29 at-bats. 
  • Eichten led the PC offense, finishing 3-3 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored. 
 
GAME TWO NOTES 
  • Douma got the Friars on the board with a sac-fly in the first that scored Smith.  
  • Smith scored another run in the second inning as Hanna Aldrich grounded out to third base. 
  • The Texans cut the Friars' lead to 2-1 on the throw to second in the top of the sixth.  
  • The Friars held on to the 2-1 lead for the remainder of the game.  
  • Walter pitched a complete game for the Friars. The senior registered four strikeouts while holding the Texans to only two hits and one earned run.

The Friars will conclude the series with the Texans tomorrow, April 26 on Glay Field. First pitch is slated for 12:00 PM on FloCollege.
