ROSEMONT, ILL. - The Providence College softball team (29-19, 18-7 BIG EAST) lost to the Butler Bulldogs (25-19, 16-9 BIG EAST), 10-3 on Thursday, May 7 in the first round of the 2026 BIG EAST Tournament. With the result, Providence will go on to face the loser of Creighton and UConn in an elimination game later today at 6:00 p.m. CT (7:00 p.m. ET).
GAME ONE NOTES
• The Bulldogs opened the scoring with nine runs in the top of the first inning.
• The Friars got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when
Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) doubled to right field, driving in
Emily Jonte (Allen, Texas).
• Providence scored again in the fifth inning when
Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.) singled to right field, driving in
Emerson Buckley (Methuen, Mass.) and Jonte to make it 10-3, Butler. The two runs extended the game beyond five innings.
• Butler held on to its lead and secured the 10-3 victory. The Bulldogs await the winner of Creighton and UConn.
• In the circle,
Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) got the start for the Friars, lasting just 0.1 innings.
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) and
Grace Brooks (Meridan, Idaho) came in relief. Brooks pitched in with 4.0 innings of scoreless relief
• Providence dropped to 12-20 all-time in Big East Tournament play.
