Softball Sweeps Merrimack In Double-Header Action

Friars are off to their best 20-game start since 2006 after improving to 14-6 on the year.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team swept Merrimack in a non-conference double-header on Wednesday, March 16 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars have won eight of their last nine games and have improved to 14-6 on the season. Providence took the first game in decisive fashion, 8-2. In the second game, Providence overcame a 2-1 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 victory.
 
GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS:
• The Friars took advantage of two hits and two walks in the first inning, including a bases loaded, two-out walk by Lyndsey Evix to give Providence a 1-0 lead. 
• Providence took a 3-0 lead in the second as Rachael Petrarca hit a three-run homer.
• The Friars tacked on two more runs in the third to increase their lead to 6-0.
• O'Sullivan doubled to left center to score Micaela Abbatine for the first run of the inning.
• Magrino, who reached on a walk, would later cross the plate on a wild pitch. 
• Merrimack recorded two hits with two outs in the fifth inning to get their first run of the afternoon (6-1). Sarah Reisler was credited with an RBI double, which scored Courtney Lanpher.  
• The Friars responded in the bottom of the fifth on a two-run blast to center by Jacque Harrington (8-2).
Tori Grifone picked up the win in the circle for Providence. She pitched 6.1 innings and gave up two runs (one unearned), while striking out eight batters and allowing five walks.
• Elysia Cunningan pitched the final two-thirds of the seventh inning. She faced two batters and recorded one strike out.
• Petrarca finished the game 2-3 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.  
• As a team, Providence recorded seven hits and did not commit an error in the field.
 
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS:
• Merrimack scored one run in the first and the third inning to take a 2-0 lead.
• The Friars cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth (2-1).
Tiana Wren recorded the RBI as she laced a two-out double to right-centerfield to score Lea Koskinski.
• Evix entered the game to pinch hit in the bottom of the sixth and she took advantage of the opportunity to a two-RBI single to right center. Her clutch hit gave the Friars a 3-2 lead heading into the seventh inning.
• Merrimack went three up, three down in the bottom of the seventh as Providence secured the come-back victory (3-2).
Jessica Walter went the distance for the Friars in the circle, giving up seven hits and allowing two runs. She struck out six batters and walked two.
 
NOTES:
• Providence improved to 14-6 on the season.
• Today's games vs. Merrimack marked the Friars' first home games of the season at Glay Field.
• It's the best 20-game start for the Friars since 2006. That year, Providence posted a 16-4 mark through the first 20 games of the season.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars resume BIG EAST Conference play with a three-game series against St. John's on March 18-20. All games will be played at Glay Field on the Providence College campus in Providence, R.I.
