PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team split two games against St. John's in BIG EAST play on Friday, March 18 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Red Storm defeated the Friars, 2-1, in game one and the Friars blanked St. John's, 8-0, in six innings in game two. The Friars improved to 15-7 overall and 3-2 in BIG EAST action.
GAME ONE
-The Friars scored first in the second inning off a single to the left side from Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.). Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) contributed the run for the Friars.
-The next three innings were scoreless for both teams. The Friars held a 1-0 lead.
-The Red Storm scored two runs in the sixth inning to gain a 2-1 advantage.
-Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) pitched a complete game for the Friars allowing three hits while striking out eight batters.
GAME TWO
-The Friars got off to an early 4-0 start in the first inning. Micaela Abbatine (Warwick, N.Y.), Madi Traver (Irving, Texas) and Nunez all recorded RBIs for Providence.
-Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) hit an RBI single in the third inning to extend the Friars lead to 5-0.
-In the bottom of the sixth inning, Lea Kosinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) singled to center field allowing Abbatine to score on the play. The Friars led by seven.
-Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) earned her sixth win of the season pitching a complete game. She struck out eight batters and allowed four hits.
ON DECK
The Friars will conclude the three-game series against St. John's on Sunday, March 20 at 12:00 p.m. before traveling to Kingston, R.I. to face intra-state rival, the University of Rhode Island, on Tuesday, March 22 at 3:00 p.m.
