Field Hockey Falls To VCU, 1-0

The loss to the Rams marked the first loss of the season for Providence at Lennon Family Field.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to non-conference foe VCU, 1-0, on Sunday, Oct. 3. The game served as the backdrop for Homecoming Weekend and Alumni Day. The loss to the Rams marked the first home loss of the season for Providence.
 
1ST QUARTER:
• The Friars held the majority of the possession in the first quarter and recorded the advantage in shots (3-1) and penalty corners (1-0).
• All three of the Friars' shot attempts were on target.
• The two teams were scoreless (0-0) after the 
 
2nd QUARTER:
• The teams remained scoreless until Maite Sturm gave VCU a 1-0 lead with 10-seconds remaining in the half.
• After an initial touch in the circle, Sturm found herself wide open with only the goalkeeper to beat and fired a low shot into the board.
• VCU took the advantage into halftime.
 
3RD QUARTER:
• VCU outshot the Friars 3-1 in the third and held a 2-1 edge in penalty corners.
• Both teams were scoreless during the frame.
 
4TH QUARTER:
• VCU still maintained its 1-0 lead as time was winding down in regulation.
• Providence pulled its goalkeeper in favor of an extra attacking player in the final 1:58 of the game.
• Providence recorded two penalty corners and two shots in the final minute of play, but were unable to get the equalizer.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• The Friars lost for the first time at home this season, snapping a five-game wins streak on Lennon Family Field.
• Shots were even for the game (7-7) and Providence held a 5-3 edge in corners.
Asia Porter played 58:02 and made three saves for the Friars.
• Sasha Elliott collected five saves in goal for VCU.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence will host Temple in BIG EAST play on Friday, Oct. 8. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on FloSports.
