LYNCHBURG, VA. – The Providence College field hockey team held firm defensively against the No. 7 Liberty Flames for 55 minutes of play before conceding two goals late in the fourth quarter. The Friars fell to 8-6 overall (1-4 BIG EAST), while Liberty improved to 11-2 (5-0 BIG EAST).
GAME FLOW:
• The first quarter ended in a scoreless tie, 0-0. Providence led in shots (3-0) and shots on goal (1-0).
• The Friars held Liberty without a shot until 4:44 remained in the second quarter. Lou Combrinck attempted the shot on a penalty corner and it was turned away by freshman goalkeeper
Ava Porter (Somerset, Mass.).
• The game remained scoreless at halftime (0-0). The Flames outshot the Friars 3-0 in the second quarter, with each attempts coming off penalty corner opportunities.
• Porter made five saves in the third quarter to keep the game scoreless as the two teams headed to the final frame locked in a 0-0 tie.
• The Flames broke through with 5:25 remaining in regulation as Julieta Tornati tallied on a corner, assisted by Dara Semmartin.
• Less than a minute later, Liberty added an insurance goal (55:28) as Lou Combrinck scored off a rebound (2-0).
• Porter finished the afternoon with seven saves in goal for Providence.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence returns to Lennon Family Field to host a pair of games next weekend. On Friday, Oct. 24, the Friars will host BIG EAST foe Villanova at 3:00 p.m. Providence will close the weekend with cross-city rival Brown on Sunday, Oct. 26 at Noon.
