Bo Martina Named BIG EAST Co-Midfielder Of The Year

Martina named to All-BIG EAST First Team; Carly van Benten recognized on Second Team.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A pair of Providence College field hockey players were honored by the BIG EAST on Thursday, Nov. 6 as the league announced its major postseason awards and All-BIG EAST selections. Junior Bo Martina (Nieuw Vennep, Netherlands) was named BIG EAST Co-Midfielder of the Year and earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors. Junior forward Carly van Benten (Ashburn, Va.) claimed All-BIG EAST Second Team recognition.
 
Martina is the first player in program history to earn BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year accolades and has been featured on the All-BIG EAST First Team for the second-straight season. Additionally, Martina is one of 12 players in program history to be named to the First Team in multiple seasons. She finished the 2025 season with a team-best 22 points on nine goals and four assists. Her nine goals also marked a career high. She finished the season ranked fourth in the BIG EAST in goals per game (0.53) and sixth in points per game (1.29). In August, Martina was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and was named to the NFHCA Division I Watch List. Through three seasons, she ranks 34th all-time in career scoring at Providence with 46 points (204 players ranked), 33rd in goals (16) and 28th in assists (14).
 
The only other players in program history to earn one of the conference's major postseason awards for field hockey include Cathy Guden (BIG EAST Player of the Year, 1993), Paula Wagoner (BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, 1997) and Rachel Chamberlain (BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year, 2006 and 2007). Three players have earned BIG EAST Freshman / Rookie of the Year and include current junior Florencia Talarico (2023), Manon van Weezel (2017) and Wagoner (1994).
 
Van Benten had a breakout season with the Friars. She posted a career-high 18 points on five goals and a team-best eight assists. She recorded a season-high three points on two occasions this season during games against Merrimack (1g/1a) and New Hampshire (1g/1a), and also registered the first multi-assist game of her career vs. Boston University, with two. During BIG EAST Conference play, Van Benten recorded six points on two goals and one assist. She finished the season ranked fifth in the BIG EAST in assists per game (0.47) and 10th in points per game (1.06).
