STORRS, CONN. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to Connecticut, 3-1, in BIG EAST action on Oct. 3 in Storrs, Conn. The Friars dropped to 6-4 on the year (1-2 BIG EAST), while the Huskies improved to 4-5 (2-1 BIG EAST).
GAME FLOW:
• The first quarter finished in a scoreless tie (0-0). Providence and UConn each recorded one shot in the frame.
• In the second quarter, the Huskies were awarded four-consecutive penalty corners over the final 1:17. On the fourth corner, Julia Bressler gave UConn a 1-0 lead with 35-seconds left on the clock. The goal was assisted by Sol Simone and Milou Heuker.
• Providence's
Ava Porter collected five saves in the first half.
• The Friars earned their first penalty corner of the afternoon with 34-seconds left in the third and a shot attempt by
Bo Martina was turned away by UConn's goalkeeper.
• The Huskies carried their one-goal lead into the fourth quarter. The Friars outshot UConn, 3-2, in the third frame.
• UConn scored its second goal of the game on a penalty corner at 47:08. Porter turned away an initial shot, by the Huskies but Violeta Francese collected a loose ball in front of the cage and lifted it into the goal.
• Providence pulled Porter in favor of an extra attacker, but in the closing minutes the Huskies were awarded a penalty stroke opportunity.
• Bressler converted the stroke attempt to give UConn a 3-0 lead at 57:32.
• Providence got on the board at 58:22 as
Carly van Benten notched her third goal of the season. She collected a rebound of an initial shot by Martina on a penalty corner and punched the ball over the goal line.
NOTES:
• Van Benten recorded her third goal of the season and is now tied for the team lead in points (13). Van Benten also owns a team-best seven assists on the year.
• Porter finished the day with seven saves.
• Providence won the previous two regular-season meetings against UConn in 2023 and 2024.
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Sunday, Oct. 5 against non-conference foe Vermont. The game will be played in Burlington, Vt. and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
