Field Hockey To Face UConn And Vermont On The Road

Friars open the weekend with a BIG EAST match against the Huskies on Friday, Oct. 3 in Storrs, Conn.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will hit the road for two games this weekend, beginning on Friday, Oct. 3 in Storrs, Conn. against BIG EAST foe UConn at 3:00 p.m. The Friars conclude the weekend with a non-conference match against Vermont in Burlington, Vt. at 1:00 p.m.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE (6-3, 1-1 BIG EAST):
• Providence enters the weekend with a 6-3 record, including a 1-1 mark in BIG EAST play.
• The Friars have won two-straight games heading into their match-up against UConn. On Sept. 26, the Friars shutout BIG EAST foe Georgetown, 2-0. On Sept. 28, Providence defeated Hofstra, 3-1.
• The Friars have defeated UConn in each of the last two seasons. On Oct. 18, 2024, the Friars earned a 3-2 victory in double overtime in Providence, R.I., with Bo Martina securing the game-winning goal. On Oct. 13, 2023, the Friars prevailed 2-1 in double-overtime. Florencia Talarico scored the game-winning goal.
• Junior Lily Procaccianti tallied three goals in two games last week, including both of Providence's goals in its win over Georgetown (2-0). She was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 30.
• Procaccianti leads the team in scoring (13 points) and goals (six) and has recorded one assist.
• Junior Bo Martina ranks second on the team in scoring (12 points) and goals (five) and has added two assists.
• Junior Carly van Benten rounds out the list of double-digit scorers with 11 points on two goals and a team-best seven assists.
• Freshman Ari Ftorek is fourth in scoring with nine points on four goals and one assist. Her four goals ranks third on the team.
• Nine different players have scored at least one goal this season through nine games, including six multi-goal scorers.
• A handful of players have recorded their first career points this season, including Piper Cline, Johanna Mahner, Martu Torre Festa, Ari Ftorek and Lilia Payne.
• Freshman goalkeeper Ava Porter has started all nine games in the cage for Providence. She owns a 6-3 record (1-1 BIG EAST) and has compiled a 1.19 goals against average and a 0.776 save percentage. She has two shut-out victories on the season (4-0 vs. Bryant and 2-0 vs. Georgetown).
• Porter earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll accolades on Sept. 30. She has been honored by the league three times this season. On Sept. 2, she was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. She has been selected to the honor roll, twice (Sept. 9, Sept. 30).
• As a team, Providence ranks first in the BIG EAST and ninth in the nation in penalty corners per game (8.00).
Bo Martina and Macie Pennisi were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team in August. Martina was a unanimous selection, having come off a 2024 campaign in which she earned All-BIG EAST First Team and NFHCA First-Team All-Northeast Region honors.

SCOUTING CONNECTICUT (3-5, 1-1 BIG EAST):
• Connecticut enters the weekend with a 3-5 overall record, including a 1-1 mark in BIG EAST play.
• All five of the Huskies losses have come against nationally ranked opponents. Three of those losses were decided by a goal, including two games that went to overtime.
• According to FieldHockeyCorner.com ratings, the Huskies have played the sixth-toughest schedule in the nation to this point.
• In BIG EAST action, UConn defeated Villanova, 2-1, on Sept. 19. The Huskies lost to No. 5 Liberty, 1-0, in their most recent league game on Sept. 26.
• The Huskies have scored 12 goals this season as a team. Julia Bressler and Pien Prins combined to score six of those goals (three each).
• Sol Simone is tied for the team lead in scoring with Bressler and Prins (six points). She has recorded one goal and a team-best four assists.  
• Natalie McKenna has played 494 minutes in the cage for UConn and owns a 0.695 save percentage and a 2.19 goals against average.
 
SCOUTING VERMONT (5-4, 0-0 AMERICA EAST):
• Vermont enters the weekend with a 5-4 overall record and will open America East Conference play against New Hampshire on Friday, Oct. 3 before hosting the Friars on Sunday.
• The Catamounts enjoyed a five-game win streak before falling to Appalachian State (7-1) and Cornell (3-2) last weekend.
• Alicia Battistelli leads the offense with 13 points on six goals and one assist. 
• Consu de Castro and Veerle Nijhuis are tied for second in scoring, with 13 points each. Both players have recorded five goals and one assist.
• Battistelli, De Castro and Nihuis have combined to score 16 of the Catamount's 24 goals this season.
• Merle Vaandrager has played 488 minutes in the cage this season and owns a 1.97 goals average and a 0.686 save percentage.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• Providence will return to Lennon Family Field next weekend for a pair of matches. The Friars will host BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac on Friday, Oct. 10 at 3:00 p.m. and will close the weekend slate with Sacred Heart on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 12:00 p.m.
