Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Villanova

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Providence College softball team split its doubleheader with the Villanova Wildcats on Saturday, April 6 in Villanova, Pa. The Friars won game one by escaping a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to prevail, 2-1. Providence fell in game two, 4-0, after a strong pitching performance by the Wildcats. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) broke the all-time hits record in her first at-bat of the day, singling to left field, to tally her 215th career hit and pass Rachel Bartholomew.
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
-Providence gained the lead late in the game and secured the win by stranding three runners in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Villanova, 2-1.
- Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) tallied her ninth RBI of the season to give the Friars a 1-0 advantage in the top of the fifth inning. San Antonio brought in Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) after Compton doubled to center field to start the inning.
- The Friars added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning, Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) provided what would end up as the winning hit, scoring Lee with an RBI single to center field. Portillo's RBI marked her team-high 19th of the season.
- Villanova inched back with a lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Wildcats cut the lead to one, 2-1, after an RBI single.
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) earned the start in the circle. She was the pitcher of record and picked up her 12th win of the season, tying her for first in the BIG EAST in wins.
- Providence tallied seven hits in the game, Lee picked up a team-high three hits.
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
-Villanova scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning, which proved to be the only runs of the game, as they defeated Providence, 4-0.
- The Wildcats gained the lead with a sacrifice fly to left field for their first run of the fourth inning. Villanova tacked on three more runs with an RBI single followed by a two RBI double to take a 4-0 lead heading into the top of the fifth inning.
- Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) got the start in the circle, going four innings while striking out four batters. She was the pitcher of record and fell to 7-5 on the season. Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) relieved McCune to pitch the final two innings. Trinidad gave up zero earned runs while allowing just one hit.
- Providence tallied three hits in the second game. Lee, Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) and Compton picked up the hits.

Providence returns to the field for the rubber match against Villanova tomorrow, April 7 at 12:00 p.m.
