Friars Split Doubleheader At Georgetown

Gabriella Sebastian led the charge for the Providence offense in game two, recording a double and a home run.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Providence College softball team wrapped up its series at Georgetown (10-26, 1-17 BIG EAST) with a doubleheader on Thursday, April 17 in Washington, D.C. The Friars fell, 7-0, in the opener, but bounced back with a 7-2 victory in game two to secure the series win, 2-1. With the split, Providence moved to 18-24 overall and 11-10 in BIG EAST play. Senior Gabriella Sebastian (Ramsey, N.J.) powered the Friars' offense in the second game, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and a home run. The homer was her third of the series and fifth of her career. 

GAME ONE NOTES  
  • The Hoyas opened the scoring with a two-run RBI double in the bottom of the first (2-0).  
  • Georgetown added three more in the fourth to extend its lead to 5-0.  
  • The Hoyas sealed a 7-0 win with a two-run home run in the fifth.  
  • Four Friars spent time in the circle. Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) led the pitching staff with four strikeouts.  
GAME TWO NOTES 
  • Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.) got the Friars on the board early by stealing home in the top of the first inning. 
  • Kaelyn Loncharich (Yucaipa, Calif.) followed with an RBI single in the same frame, driving in Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) to give Providence a 2-0 lead. 
  • The Friars tacked on three more runs in the top of the second, highlighted by a solo home run from Sebastian, her third of the series and fifth of her career. 
  • Georgetown responded with an RBI double in the bottom of the second to make it 5-1. 
  • Sebastian came around to score her second run of the day in the sixth inning, capitalizing as Peterson was caught stealing to extend the Friars' lead to 6-1. 
  • The Hoyas trimmed the lead to 6-2 in the bottom half of the sixth with another RBI double. 
  • Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) added a solo home run in the top of the seventh to seal a 7-2 victory for Providence. 
  • Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) pitched a complete game for the Friars. The senior recorded a season-high seven strikeouts. She conceded 10 hits and two earned runs.  
 
ON DECK 
The Friars will remain on the road for a pair of non-conference matchups next week. Providence is set to face Stonehill in a doubleheader on Monday, April 21, beginning at 1:00 p.m. The team will then head to Smithfield, R.I. to take on Bryant in a single game on Wednesday, April 23 at 4:00 p.m.
