Friars Split Non-Conference Doubleheader At Stonehill

Elisa Smith registered her first collegiate home run.

EASTON, Mass. – The Providence College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Stonehill College (12-30, 3-12 NEC) on Monday, April 21 in Easton, Mass. The Friars took game one with an 11-1 victory in five innings, before falling in game two, 12-4, in six innings. Following the split, Providence moved to 19-25 overall (11-10 BIG EAST). Junior Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) led the way in the opener, going 2-for-2 with four RBI and three runs scored. Her performance included a two-run home run, which was the first of her career. 
 

GAME ONE NOTES  

· Smith opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give Providence an early 2-0 lead. The homer was the first of her career.  

· Later in the inning, senior Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) crossed the plate on a groundout by Brianna De La Fuente (Metuchen, N.J.) (3-0). 

· The Friars added another run in the second when Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) scored on a throw as Valentia Iula (Westbury, N.Y.) was caught stealing. Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) followed with a three-run homer to extend the advantage to 7-0.  

· Stonehill responded in the bottom half of the inning with back-to-back doubles to trim the deficit to 7-1. 

· Providence tacked on four more runs over the next two innings that included a two-run double from Smith to secure an 11-1 win in five innings. 

· Sophomore Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) earned the win, pitching all five innings. She allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out three. 

· Smith led the Friars offensively with two hits, four RBI and three runs scored. 
 

GAME TWO NOTES 

· Stonehill opened the scoring with an RBI single in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. 

· Providence responded in the top of the second, as Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.) launched a solo home run to tie the game, marking her second of the season. 

· The Skyhawks regained control in the third with a four-run frame to go ahead, 5-1. 

· The Friars answered in the fourth inning. Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.) led off with a solo home run—her third of the season. Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) followed with a sacrifice bunt that brought home Becca Weaver (Cary, Ill.), and Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.) reached on a bunt that resulted in a Stonehill error, allowing Hanna Alrich (Taunton, Mass.) to score. Providence trimmed the deficit to 5-4. 

· Stonehill responded in the fifth inning, plating three more runs to widen the gap to 8-4. 

· Stonehill added four unearned runs in the sixth inning that was capped by a walk-off, two-run home run to secure the 12-4 win and end the game in the sixth. 

· Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) and Emily Jonte (Allen, Texas) split pitching duties for the Friars. Walter tallied four strikeouts while allowing four earned runs. Jonte struck out one and did not allow an earned run.

The Friars will continue road play with a single game at Bryant on Wednesday, April 23 in Smithfield, R.I. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
