12th-Ranked Michigan Defeats Friars, 8-1

Ally DeCoste netted her third goal of the weekend and team-best fourth goal overall.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team fell to 12th-ranked Michigan, 8-1, in non-conference action on Sept. 8 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars evened their record at 2-2, while Michigan improved to 3-1.
 
GAME FLOW:
• Michigan took an early 1-0 lead at the 3:47 mark as Abby Tamer redirected a feed at the left post from Alana Richardson.
Florencia Talarico (Buenos Aires, Argentina) charged down the field for the Friars moments later and pushed the ball to the right post where Ally DeCoste (Braintree, Mass.) touched it in to tie the game, 1-1, at 5:07. 
• The Wolverines answered with back-to-back goals at 8:05 and 10:41 to gain a 3-1 advantage, both of which came off penalty corners. Pilar Oliveros was credited with the first strike, unassisted, as she collected a rebound off an initial shot. Erin Reilly tallied the second goal off a feed from Claire Taylor.
• Michigan got off to a quick start in the second quarter, converting a penalty corner at 16:14. Oliveros tallied her second goal of the game off a feed from Abby Burnett.
• The remainder of the quarter was scoreless and Michigan took a 4-1 lead into the half.
• Richardson opened the scoring for Michigan just 42-seconds into the third, unassisted. She collected a rebound off a blocked shot and fired it over the goal line.
• Richardson struck again at 32:59. Lora Clark aerial dribbled into the circle and flipped the ball upward across the goal mouth before Richardson slapped it down into the cage.
• Tamer added another Wolverine goal at 34:40 as she collected a rebound off an initial shot and fired it by Asia Porter for her second of the day. 
• The Wolverines took a 7-1 lead into the fourth.
• Kate McLaughlin made it an 8-1 game just 1:50 into final frame, assisted by Cai Wiseman.
• The Friars drew three of their four offensive penalty corners in the fourth quarter, but could not find the back of the cage.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• DeCoste scored her third goal of the weekend and team-best fourth goal overall.
• Talarico tallied her team-best second assist of the season. 
• Michigan led in shots (19-8), shots on goal (13-5) and penalty corners (7-4).
• The Wolverines converted three goals in the first and third quarters. 
• Porter finished the game with five saves in goal for Providence.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars complete their four-game homestand next weekend with back-to-back games against Dartmouth and Boston College. Providence will host Dartmouth on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 3:00 p.m. The Friars close the weekend with Boston College on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1:00 p.m.
