Alyssa Twomey struck out nine batters in game one against UMass Lowell.
TOWSON, Md.- The Providence College softball team earned a split in the double header on day one of the DeMarini Tiger Clash on Friday, March 1 in Towson, Md. The Friars edged out UMass Lowell (1-9), 4-3, in game one and fell to Towson (6-10), 3-2, in game two. The Friars are 4-7 overall this season. Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) pitched a complete game for the Friars in game one against UMass Lowell, striking out nine batters. Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) scored two runs in game two.
GAME 1 NOTES
-UMass Lowell opened the game's scoring with two runs in the top of the first.
-Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) singled to right in the bottom of the second to score Lea Konsinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.).
-With bases-loaded in the bottom of the fourth, Julia Renny (Syosset, N.Y.) grounded out to short stop allowing for Brianna De La Fuente (Metuchen, N.J.) to cross the plate from third.
-The River Hawks regained the lead by scoring a run in the top of the sixth.
-With bases loaded, Providence answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth after Harrington registered a singled to left center, which plated two runs. Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) and Petrarca scored.
- Twomey pitched a complete game for PC, recording nine strikeouts.
GAME 2 NOTES
-The Tigers took an early lead after scoring a run in the bottom of the second.
-In the top of the third, Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) recorded an RBI fly-out to left field allowing Harrington to make it home and tie the score at 1-1.
-Towson countered with a home run in the bottom of the third.
-Harrington homered in the top of the fifth to level the score at 2-2.
-The Tigers sealed a 3-2 victory with a late run in the bottom of the seventh.
-Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) and Riley Quirk (Holden, Mass.) split time on the circle for Providence, pitching 4.0 and 2.2 innings, respectively. Grifone faced 18 batters, surrendering two earned runs, and striking out five.
ON DECK
The Friars will play day two of the DeMarini Tiger Clash against Howard University on Saturday, March 2. in Towson, Md. First pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 10:00 a.m.
