Softball Set to Compete in DeMarini Tiger Clash Hosted by Towson University

TOWSON, Md.- The Providence college softball team will travel to Towson, Md. to compete in the DeMarini Tiger Clash hosted by Towson University from Mar.1- Mar.3. Providence will play against UMass Lowell (Mar. 1, Mar. 3), Towson University (Mar. 1) and Howard University (Mar. 1, Mar. 3).
 
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
Providence enters the weekend 3-6 overall after splitting 2-2 in the UNCW Tournament in Wilmington, N.C. from Feb. 23- Feb. 25.
 
Freshman pitcher Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) was named Freshman and Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 26) following her performances over the weekend. In three games played at the UNCW Tournament, Twomey commanded the circle for the Friars, earning them two wins while leading the team with a 1.11 era and 19 strikeouts. In the first game against UMBC on Saturday Feb. 24, Alyssa pitched a complete game allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out 11. Twomey currently boasts a team-best 1.67 ERA and 22 strikeouts.
 
Sophomore Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll (Feb. 26) after spearheading the Friars' offense this past weekend, going 5-for-9 while tallying three runs, one home run and five RBIs. She also posted a 1.111 slugging percentage and a .667 on base percentage throughout the UNCW Tournament. Sofia leads the team in RBIs (six), runs (three) and hits (seven).
 
SCOUTING UMASS LOWELL
The River Hawks are currently 1-8 in their first nine games. UMass Lowell most recently competed in the CSU Blue/Gold Classic in Charleston, S.C. from Feb.16-Feb.18, going 0-5 against St. John's (Feb. 16, Feb. 17, Feb. 18) and Charleston Southern University (Feb. 16, Feb. 17).
 
Senior Lea White starting has started all nine games for the River Hawks, leading the team in batting average (.367), RBIs (five) and hits (11).
 
Pitchers Giana LaCedra and Ryley White hold a 6.13 and 6.27 era, pitching 16.0 and 22.1 innings, respectively.  
 
SCOUTING TOWSON UNIVERSITY
The Tigers enter the weekend with a 5-9 overall record. Towson most recently posted 2-4 series record in the East Carolina Tournament from Feb.23-Feb.25.
 
Mackenzie Lake and Cara Bohner have started all 14 games for Towson. They lead the Tiger offense, respectively posting a .341 and .325 batting average. Lake has a team-high 15 hits and nine runs while Bohner has tallied the eight RBIs and two home runs.
 
Erin Brown has led the circle for Towson, pitching 28 innings and facing 109 batters while recording 15 strikeouts, posting a 2.50 ERA.
 
 
SCOUTING HOWARD UNIVERSITY
The Bison enter the tournament boasting a 12-3 overall record, with a 10-2 record in neutral site games.
 
Bianca Worthy has started all 13 games for the Bison, batting 17-for-41 (.415). Worthy leads the team in ops (.967), RBIs (11), hits (17), runs (11) and slugging percentage (.512). Sidney Fletcher rounds out the Bison offense, having tallied 10 RBIs, two home runs, 14 hits and 10 runs.
 
Mia Gonzales has earned six wins on the circle for Howard, posting a 1.63 ERA, eight earned runs and 20 strikeouts over 34.1 innings.
 
ON DECK
The Friars will travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to kick-off BIG EAST play against Butler University in a three-game series beginning on March 8.
