Softball Splits Final Day UNCW Tournament Action

Emma Douma and Sofia Peterson tallied two RBIs and one run each in game one.
WILMINGTON, N.C.- The Providence College softball team split day three of the UNCW Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 25 in Wilmington, N.C. The Friars edged out UMBC (2-4), 7-6, in six innings and fell to UNCW (7-5), 2-1. The Friars are now 3-6 overall this season and posted a 2-2 record on the weekend. Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) and Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) each tallied two RBIs and one run in game one against UMBC.
GAME 1 NOTES
- Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.) tripled and eventually scored on Douma's RBI fielder's choice in the top of the first.
- In the top of the second, Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) singled to left center to bring Julia Renny home.
-The Retrievers tied the score at two following two runs in the bottom of the second.
-Providence added two runs with an RBI double from Douma and an RBI fielder's choice from Lea Kosinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) in the top of the third. Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) and Douma scored.
-Peterson hit a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to give the Friars a 6-2 lead.
-UMBC evened the score at 6-6, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
-The Friars re-gained the lead in the top of the sixth with a solo home run from Harrington to take a 7-6 lead.
-Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) and Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.), split time on the circle, pitching 4.1 and 1.2 innings respectively.
-The game ended in six innings with a score of 7-6 in favor of the Friars.
GAME 2 NOTES
-Providence opened the game's scoring in the top of the second inning. Sofia Peterson doubled and eventually scored on a UNCW error.
-UNCW countered with two runs late in the bottom of the sixth.
- Twomey pitched four scoreless innings, striking out five.
- Riley Quirk (Holden, Mass.) allowed one earned run over two innings.
ON DECK
The Friars will close out tournament play for the 2024 regular season at the DeMarini Tiger Clash hosted by Towson University in Towson, Md. The Friars will play five games from Mar.1 through Mar.3. against UMass Lowell (Mar.1, Mar.3), Towson University (Mar.1) and Howard University (Mar.2, Mar. 3).
