CHICAGO, Ill. – The Providence College men's and women's track teams competed on the final day of the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Indoor Track and Field Facility in Chicago, Ill.
Shannon Flockhart,
Kimberley May and the 4x800-meter relay team all claimed gold in their respective events.
On the women's side,
Shannon Flockhart (Longstanton, England) won the mile in a time of 4:36.92. Flockhart is the first Friar since 2003 to win the event.
Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) followed in 4:46.12 to place fourth.
Kimberley May (Auckland, New Zealand) ran an 8:54.43 to win the 3,000 meters. May's performance ranks as top all-time in BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship history. Former Friar Kim Smith held the previous record for 20 years. May was also named Track Athlete of the BIG EAST Indoor Championship.
Following May in the 3,000 meters was
Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) in fourth (9:24.03) and
Laura Mooney (Cappincur, Ireland) in seventh (9:25.83).
Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland), Laverty, Flockhart and
Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) won the 4x800-meter relay in a time of 8:40.43. The team's performance is the Friars' first title in the event since 1992.
Nicole Borowiec (Morristown, N.J.) ran the 60-meter hurdles in 8:79 for a fifth-place finish.
Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) and
Alex O'Neill finished the 800 meters in sixth (2:08.32) and eighth (2:09.80), respectively.
Jill Fenerty (Franklin, Mass.),
Kiera Hall (Christchurch, New Zealand),
Lexi Brent (York, Maine) and
Maeve O'Neill placed seventh in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:51.69.
On the men's side,
Josh Lewin (West Chester, Pa.),
Tyler Bartlett (Fairfield, Conn.),
Michael Morgan (Sligo, Ireland) and
Will Johnston (Auckland, New Zealand) finished fourth in the 4x800-meter relay in 7:34.25.
Jon Mignacca (Seekonk, Mass.) reached 1.96 meters in the high jump to place fourth.
The team of Will Rainey (San Jose, Calif.),
Kyle Bloomer (Darien, Conn.),
Brett Lehman (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) and Lewin placed fifth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:17.85, marking a program record.
Zane Powell (Auckland, New Zealand) ran a 4:13.07 to place eighth in the mile.
Jacob Hefele (Danbury, Conn.) followed in 12
th with a time of 4:23.88.
Pat Thygesen (Brisbane, Australia) finished seventh in the 3,000-meters with a time of 8:02.85. DJ Principe (Johnston, R.I.) followed in eighth in 8:06.46 and
Luke Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) finished in tenth with a personal record time of 8:19.40.
