Men’s And Women’s Track Compete In Relay Races At Penn Relays

The men’s DMR team placed third, the women’s DMR finished seventh and the women’s 4x400 team broke the program record in 3:44.31.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Providence College men's and women's distance medley teams competed in the second day of the Penn Relays on Friday, April 24, in Philadelphia, Pa. In the College Men's Distance Medley Relay, the Friars finished third. In the Women's Distance Medley Championship of America, the Friars finished seventh and in the College Women's 4 x 400-meter relay heats, the Friars broke the program record in 3:44.31 and finished fourth overall. Junior Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) ran the 1,200-meter leg in the DMR in 3:13.34, the second fastest in Penn Relays history.

In the College Women's 4 x 400-meter relay heats, the team of senior Jillian Fenerty (Franklin, Mass.), sophomore Keira Kelly (Scotch Plains, N.J.), sophomore Chloe Higgins (Morristown, N.J.) and junior Margaret Kemper (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) placed fourth overall in a program record time of 3:44.31.

In the Women's Distance Medley Championship of America, the team of freshman Gemma Galvin (Clare, Ireland), Higgins, junior Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) and senior Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) placed seventh overall in 11:01.45. O'Neill ran the 1,200 meters in 3:13.34, Higgins ran the 400 meters in 56.07, Galvin ran the 800-meter leg in 2:09.65 and Laverty finished the 1,600 meters in 4:42.40. O'Neill's 3:13.34 split in the 1,200 meters is the second fastest in Penn Relays history.

On the men's side, the Distance Medley Relay team of junior Tyler Bartlett (Fairfield, Conn.), senior Kyle Bloomer (Darien, Conn.), sophomore Thomas Breen (Providence, R.I.) and sophomore Elliott Pugh (Tauranga, New Zealand) finished third overall in a time of 9:41.82. Bartlett started the race with a 1,200-meter split of 2:58.31. Bloomer ran the 400 meters in 48.01. Breen completed the 800-meter leg in 1:48.91, moving the Friars from fifth to second. Pugh closed the race with a 1,600-meter split of 4:06.61.
