STORRS, Conn. – The Providence College men's and women's track and field teams traveled to Storrs, Conn., for Day 3 of the BIG EAST Outdoor Track Championship on May 17. The competition took place at the Sherman Sports Complex at the University of Connecticut. Overall, the women scored 78 points and finished fifth. It marked just the third time ever the team finished in the top five and first time since 1990 (1990 – fifth; 1987 – fourth). The men registered 54 points and placed seventh.

On the women's side, junior
Maeve O'Neill (Cork, Ireland) captured the 800-meter title and broke her own school record of 2:02.22 with a time of 2:02.05. It also was a meet and facility record.
O'Neill earned another title and All-BIG EAST honors as she helped her teammates freshman
Gemma Galvin (Clare, Ireland), junior Keira Hall (Christchurch, New Zealand) and senior
Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) capture the 4 x 800 race in a time of 8:30.87 – a meet and a facility record. It marked the fifth consecutive year the Friar women's team won the 4 x 800.
For her efforts, O'Neill was named the BIG EAST Most Outstanding Female Track Performer.
In the women's 1,500-meter finals, senior
Cara Laverty (Derry, Ireland) led the Friars, placing third and earning All-BIG EAST accolades in a personal-best time of 4:16.32. Following Laverty and scoring was freshman
Gemma Galvin (Clare, Ireland), who placed sixth (4:21.54) and sophomore
Annie Mann (Hampshire, England) in seventh position (4:23.99).
The women's 4x400-meter team placed third in a time of 3:45.43. The team comprised of sophomores
Chloe Higgins (Morristown, N.J.) and
Keira Kelly (Scotch Plains, N.J.), junior
Maggie Kemper (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) and senior
Jill Fenerty (Franklin, Mass.) all earned All-BIG EAST accolades.
The women's 4x100-meter relay finished sixth and scored in a time of 48.53. The team consisted of junior
Cate Parks (Marion, Mass), Kelly, Higgins and freshman
Maya Bergamesca (Pembroke, Mass).
For the men's team, sophomore
Elliott Pugh (Tauranga, New Zealand) finished second (3:43.55) and garnered All-BIG EAST honors in the 1,500-meter finals. Also scoring in the 1,500 was junior
Tyler Bartlett (Fairfield, Conn.) (fourth – 3:45.99). Freshmen
Oliver Neate (Sydney, Australia) also ran in the finals and finished in a time of 3:54.16.
Sophomore
Thomas Breen (Providence, R.I.) placed third and earned All-BIG EAST honors in the finals of the 800 meters in a time of 1:48.63.
The men's 4x800-meter relay team was made up of junior
Tyler Bartlett (Fairfield, Conn.), Breen, Pugh and sophomore
Cormac Dixon (Dublin, Ireland). They finished fourth and scored in a time of 7:35.07.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team of freshman
Eli Wood (South Kingstown, R.I.), junior
Owen Comiskey (Sherborn, Mass.), freshman
Matt McCabe (Marshfield, Mass.) and senior
Kyle Bloomer (Darien, Conn.) placed seventh overall (3:17.51) and scored.
The men's 4x100-meter relay was comprised of freshman
Eli Wood (South Kingstown, R.I.), junior
Jon Mignacca (Seekonk, Mass.) and seniors
Nico Fanuele (Wilmington, Mass.) and
Kyle Bloomer (Darien, Conn.). They came in seventh position and scored with a time of 44.40.
