Softball Sweeps Creighton In Double-Header

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team swept Creighton in a double-header on Friday, April 28 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars defeated the Bluejays, 5-0, in game one and won 6-5 in eight innings in game two.
 
GAME NOTES – GAME 1
- Providence flashed its defense in the top of the first inning, as junior Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) made a diving catch behind home plate and double a runner off first base.
- The teams played a scoreless opening four and a half innings before the Friars struck for a pair in the bottom of the fifth. Sophomore Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) led off the inning with a single before she came around on sophomore Kaelyn Loncharich's (Yucaipa, Calif.) first-career home run, a two-run shot to put the Friars up 2-0.
-Harrington and Petrarca added RBIs in the sixth inning to add insurance to the Friars lead, 5-0.
-Senior Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) started in the circle pitching 4.0 innings. Freshman Riley Quirk (Holden, Mass.) pitched the remaining 3.0 innings. The pitching staff allowed a combined five hits and zero runs.
 
GAME NOTES – GAME 2
-The Bluejays scored two runs in the top of the second to gain an early advantage. Alyssa Gappa reached on a Providence error and Ella Dalton added an RBI double.
-Senior Gianna Magrino (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) hit a solo home run to left center field to get the Friars on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, 2-1.
-In the top of the fifth inning, the Bluejays' Emma Rosonke doubled to center field to extend Creighton's lead, 4-1.
-The Friars responded with a two run home run from sophomore Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) to bring the Friars within one, 4-3.
-Providence tied the score in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Tiana Wren (Glen Lyon, Penn.) to center field allowing sophomore Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.) to score for the Friars, 4-4.
-Creighton regained the lead in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to center field from Kailey Wilson.
-Petrarca hit an RBI line drive to left field in the bottom of the seventh to even the score and send the game into extra innings, 5-5.
-Sophomore Gabriella Sebastian (Ramsey, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch to win the game for the Friars.
-Sophomore Jessica Walter (Middleton, Del.) pitched a complete game for the Friars. She surrendered three earned runs and struck out six batters.
 
ON DECK
The Friars will conclude their series with Creighton on Saturday, April 29 at 11:00 a.m. at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. Prior to first pitch, the Friars will honor their senior student-athletes in a senior day ceremony.
