Softball Sweeps Day One Of Buc Up! Tournament

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Providence College softball team swept Umass, 2-1, and North Dakota, 9-1, in five innings in day one of the Buc Up! Tournament on Friday, February 17 in Charleston, S.C.
 

GAME ONE NOTES

-Junior Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) hit a two-run home run in the first inning to give the Friars a 2-0 advantage.

-In the bottom of the first, UMass' Payge Suggs scored for the Minutemen on a passed ball to get on the scoreboard, 2-1.

-Junior Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) struck out three straight batters in the bottom of the fourth inning.

-Grifone pitched a complete 7.0 innings and struck out a season-high seven batters.

GAME TWO NOTES

-The Friars had a strong start to the game at the plate. Sophomore Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) double to left center field in the first inning to bring in two runs. Sophomore Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) and Harrington scored. Petrarca scored on a wild pitch to extend the Friars lead to 3.

-In the second inning, Harrington hit an RBI single bringing senior Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) home. Sophomore Lea Kosinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) doubled to left field bringing in three more runs for the Friars. The Friars led 7-0.

-The Friars extended their lead to eight with an RBI double from Harrington in the fourth inning.

-Senior Tiana Wren (Glen Lyon, Penn.) closed out the scoring for the Friars ending the game in five innings. 
 

ON DECK

The Friars will play two games in day two of the Buc Up! Tournament. Providence will face North Dakota at 12:30 p.m. and Charleston Southern at 5:30 p.m.
