Softball Spilts Doubleheader Against DePaul

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -The Providence College softball team split their doubleheader against DePaul University in BIG EAST action on Friday, May 6 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
 
GAME ONE NOTES
- The Friars grabbed an early 1-0 lead after loading the bases in the first inning. Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) drew a walk to force a run in for the Friars. 
- The Blue Demons drew even after a Baylee Cosgrove RBI single in the top of the second inning.
- Cosgrove struck again for an RBI single in the top of the fourth, followed by a two-run single by Carly Alvers to give DePaul at 4-1 lead.
- Tori Meyer added an RBI double in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring.
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) went 5.0 innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out three. Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) come on in relief to pitch the final two innings. She allowed one earned run on one hit.

GAME TWO NOTES
-DePaul got an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Friars responded with an RBI single from Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) in the bottom of the first to tie the game, 1-1.
-Petrarca doubled to center field allowing Micaela Abbatine (Warwick, N.Y.) and Mairéad O'Sullivan (Grafton, Mass.) to reach home, 3-1.
-The Blue Demons took the lead in the top of the fifth inning with back-to-back homeruns from Nicole Sullivan and Baylee Cosgrove.
-The Friars responded with back-to-back solo homeruns from Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) and Abbatine in the bottom of the fifth inning to regain the lead, 5-4.
-The Friars scored three more runs in the fifth inning. Petrarca, Madi Traver (Irving, Texas), and Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) each hit RBI singles. The Friars led 8-4.
-Grifone pitched a complete game for the Friars and improved to 12-8 on the season. She struck out eight batters and allowed five hits.
-Today's win marked the Friars first win against DePaul since May 5, 2012. 
 
ON DECK
The Friars will conclude the series against DePaul on Sunday, May 8 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. Prior to the game, the Friars will honor six members of their graduating class for senior day.
