Softball Defeats Georgetown In BIG EAST Action, 8-6

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team beat the Georgetown Hoyas, 8-6, in BIG EAST play on Friday, April 1 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Friars improved to 19-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
GAME NOTES
-The game was scoreless through the first three innings.
-Georgetown's Abby Smith homered to center field in the top of the fourth inning to give the Hoyas a 1-0 advantage.
-The Friars responded with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to gain a 3-1 lead. RBI singles from Kari Shedrick (Apex, N.C.) and Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) got the Friars on the scoreboard.
-Madi Traver (Irving, Texas) and Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) both hit a RBI doubles in the fifth inning extending the Friars lead. Micaela Abbatine (Warwick, N.Y.) and Traver contributed the run for the Friars, 5-1.
-Grifone doubled to left field with bases loaded in the fifth inning bringing in three more runs for Providence. The Friars led, 8-1.
-The Hoyas Mae Forshey homered to left field in the top of seventh inning slimming the Friars lead to four, 8-4.
-Jessica Walter (Middleton, Del.) sealed the deal for Friars at the plate with a striking out her first batter to end the game.
-Grifone pitched 5.0 innings for the Friars, allowing four hits and striking out nine batters.

The Friars and Hoyas will face each other in game two of their three game series on Saturday, April 2 on Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
