ELON, N.C. – The Providence College softball team took two games against Morgan State University on Saturday, Feb. 19 in the Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational in Elon, N.C. The Friars won the first game 3-2, and earned a 9-7 victory in game two in eight innings.
GAME ONE NOTES
-Both teams were scoreless through three innings until Morgan State scored on two RBI hits from Melissa Paz and Tayven Rousseau in the top of the fourth, 2-0.
-The Friars scored two runs on a fielding error in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, 2-2.
-In the bottom of the seventh, freshman
Kari Shedrick (Apex, N.C.) singled to left field with bases loaded giving the Friars a 3-2 victory.
-Sophomore
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) earned her second victory of the season in the circle. She pitched the entirety of the game, allowing five hits and striking out eight batters.
GAME TWO NOTES
-The Friars opened the game with three homeruns at their first three at-bats from graduate student
Micaela Abbatine (Warwick, N.Y.), sophomore
Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.), and freshman
Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) giving the Friars an early 3-0 advantage.
-Senior
Madi Traver (Irving, Texas) also fired off a homerun in the first inning bringing in a run, 4-0.
-In the top of the second, the Friars added to their lead thanks to an RBI from Petrarca. Senior
Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) contributed the run, 5-0.
-Morgan State scored off a Providence fielding error in the bottom of the second, 5-1.
-The Bears scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score and bring the game into extra innings, 5-5.
-In the top of the eighth, Providence scored four runs off hits from Nunez, Abbatine and Harrington. The Friars led 9-5.
-Morgan State's Madison Bolye hit a two-run RBI single to center field in the bottom of the eighth. The Friars maintained their lead, 9-7.
-The Friars converted 12 hits in 35 at-bats.
-Senior
Daniela Alvarez pitched 7.1 innings, allowing just four hits and contributing six strikeouts.
-Freshman
Jessica Walter relieved Alvarez in the eighth inning. She allowed one hit and struck out two batters to secure the victory.
ON DECK
The Friars will play their final game of the tournament against UMass-Lowell on Sun. Feb. 20 at 9:30 a.m. in Elon, N.C.
