The Friars will play five games between Feb. 18 – 20.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team opens its 2022 season at Elon University, who will play host to the 2022 Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational in Elon, N.C. on Feb. 18-20. The Friars will play a pair of games against Elon (Feb. 18) and Morgan State (Feb 19.), before wrapping up the tournament against UMass-Lowell (Feb. 20).

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars finished the 2021 season with a 5-16-1 overall record and 4-13-1 record in BIG EAST play.
Providence returns top hitters sophomore Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) and junior Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) in the starting lineup. During the 2021 season, Grifone recorded a .354 batting average with 17 hits and two home runs through 48 at-bats. Cunnigan posted a .297 hitting average with 11 hits, two home runs and three runs through 37 at-bats.
Senior Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) will also be returning to the mound for the Friars. Alvarez posted a 2.62 ERA over 58.2 innings pitched last season and recorded a team-high 48 strikeouts.
Providence welcomes eight newcomers to the program for the 2022 season – Kaelyn Loncharich (Yucaipa, Calif.), Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.), Gabriella Sebastian (Ramsey, N.J.), Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.), Lea Kosinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), Kari Shedrick (Apex, N.C.) and Jessica Walters (Middleton, Del.). Providence also welcomes in transfer Micaela Abbatine (Warwick, N.Y.). Abbatine is a graduate student who spent the previous two seasons at the University of Maryland.

The Phoenix wrapped up last season with an 18-21 overall record and a 10-8 record in conference play. Elon has begun its 2022 campaign with a 4-0 record.
Senior Rebecca Murray is their most notable returning position player, she hit .352 last season with 43 hits and 20 RBIs in 39 games. Junior Megan Grant also returns for the Phoenix who helped her team offensively last season recording 31 hits.
SCOUTING MORGAN STATE:
The Bears finished last season with a 24-17 overall record and a 14-5 record in conference play.
Junior Danielle Jason returns to Morgan State this season. Last season she posted a .299 batting average with 20 hits and 12 RBIs in 31 games. The Bears return sophomore Ky'Anah Lake to the circle this season. Over eight games last season, she posted a 2.94 ERA over 93.0 innings.
SCOUTING UMASS-LOWELL:
The River Hawks finished their 2021 campaign with a 13-18 overall record and 9-7 record in conference play. Umass-Lowell has started the 2022 season with a 3-2 record facing two BIG EAST schools Seton Hall and St. John's along with Auburn in the Tiger Invitational on Feb. 11-13 in Auburn, Ala.
UMass-Lowell graduated most of their starting lining up from last season. Pitcher Ryley White returns to the mound for the River Hawks. Last season she posted a 1.84 ERA over 80.0 innings.
ON DECK:
The Friars will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. to compete in the University of California- Santa Barbara (UCSB) Invitational. Providence will open the tournament on Friday, Feb. 25 with two games against Idaho State and UCSB. The Friars will face Idaho State and Boise State on Saturday, Feb. 26 before facing Boise State again to close the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 27.
