Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Elon In Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational

The Friars will face Morgan State University in day two of the tournament on Saturday, Feb. 19.

ELON, N.C. – The Providence College softball team split their season-opening doubleheader against Elon University on Friday, February 18 in Elon, N.C. The Friars took game one by a score of 8-1, while the Phoenix won game two, 8-7.
 
GAME ONE NOTES:
-Sophomore Tori Grifone (Suessex, N.J.) put the Friars in the scoring column in the top of the fourth with a homerun to center field, 1-0.
-The Friars scored four runs in the fifth inning to gain a 5-0 advantage with RBIs from Grifone and freshman Kaelyn Loncharich (Yucaipa, Calif.).  
-In the sixth inning, the Phoenix scored off a hit from Rebecca Murray, 5-1.
-The Friars closed out the game scoring three more runs in the seventh inning.
-Grifone pitched a complete seven innings, surrendering five hits and 13 strikeouts.
-Nine Friars recorded hits in game one, including three from Grifone in four at-bats. Graduate student Micaela Abbatine and junior Gianna Magrino each had a pair.
 
GAME TWO NOTES:
-Elon got on the scoreboard first in the bottom the first giving the Phoenix an early 3-0 lead.
-In the third inning, freshman Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) hit her first career homerun putting the Friars on the scoreboard, 4-2.
- Elon's Rebecca Murray responded with a homerun in the fourth inning giving the Phoenix a 5-2 advantage.
-Petrarca hit her second homerun of the night to right field in the top of the fifth, 6-3.
-Providence tied the game in the top of the sixth thanks to RBIs from Magrino and Loncharich. Junior Elysia Cunnigan scored off a wild pitch, 7-7.
-The Phoenix scored in the seventh inning with an RBI from Gabi Schaal.
-The Friars recorded nine hits off 28 at-bats and six RBIs.
-Freshman Jessica Walter (Middleton, Del.) made her pitching debut in the circle. She pitched 6.2 innings, giving up 11 hits and striking out five batters.

The Friars will face Morgan State University on day two of the Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 18 beginning at 9:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m.
