ELON, N.C.- The Providence College softball team defeated UMass-Lowell, 5-2, on Sunday, Feb. 20 in Elon, N.C. With the win, the Friars improved to 4-1 overall to begin the 2022 season.
GAME NOTES
-The River Hawks grabbed a 2-0 lead throughout the first two innings. Olivia Labbe scored off a wild pitch and Emily Tow hit a homerun to left field.
-
Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) and
Gianna Magrino (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) tied the game off singles from
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) and
Madi Traver (Irving, Texas) in the bottom of the sixth, 2-2.
- The Friars took the lead heading into the seventh inning off a single from
Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) and a double from
Tiana Wren (Glen Lyon, Pa.).
Gabriella Sebastian, (Ramsey, N.J.),
Kaelyn Loncharich (Yucaipa, Calif.) and
Madi Traver contributed the runs, 5-2.
-The Friars sealed the victory with three straight outs in the top of the seventh.
-Grifone began the game in the circle for the Friars. She pitched 1.1 innings, allowing four hits, two runs and struck out three batters.
-
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched the remainder of the game for the Friars and earned her second win of the season. She only allowed two hits, zero runs and nine strikeouts.
ON DECK
The Friars will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. to compete in the University of California- Santa Barbara (UCSB) Invitational. Providence will open the tournament on Friday, Feb. 25 with two games against Idaho State and UCSB. The Friars will face Idaho State and Boise State on Saturday, Feb. 26 before facing Boise State again to close the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 27.
