PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will travel to Santa Barbara, Calif. to compete in the Gaucho Classic. Providence will open the tournament on Friday, Feb. 25 with two games against Idaho State and UCSB. The Friars will face Idaho State and Boise State on Saturday, Feb. 26 before facing Boise State again to close the tournament on Sunday, Feb. 27.The Friars opened the season 4-1 overall after competing in the Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational on Feb. 18 – Feb. 20.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
The Friars opened the regular season posting a 4-1 record in the Elon Softball Phoenix Invitational. Providence split their opening doubleheader against Elon. They won game one, 8-1, and fell to the Phoenix 8-7 in the second game. The Friars won their final three games with two wins over Morgan State and one win against UMass- Lowell.

Freshman
Kari Shedrick (Apex, N.C.) went 6-13 at the plate posting a .462 batting average. She hit a walk-off single against Morgan State to secure the Friars' win and she was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Sophomore
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) and freshman
Rachael Petrarca (Clearwater, Fla.) also brought power to the lineup, each tallying one and three home runs, respectively. The team combined to hit seven home runs over the course of five games.

Grifone impressed in the circle, pitching 15.1 innings while allowing only five runs and striking out 24 batters. She earned two wins in the process. Senior
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched 13.0 innings and posted a 0.54 ERA, while striking out 15 batters.

SCOUTING IDAHO STATE
The Bengals are currently 4-7 on the season after playing in the Utep Invitational and GCU Purple Classic.

Idaho State's Rheanna Lewis enters the tournament with 16 hits of 32 at-bats and team-best .444 batting average. Angelica Cano follows her with a .375 batting average and has drove in 11 runs.

Emma McMurray and Haley Rainey had led the Bengals in the circle this season. McMurray has struck out nine batters over 10.0 innings and has posted a 2.10 ERA. Rainey has pitched 30.2 innings, allowing 16 runs and striking out 35 batters.
SCOUTING UCSB
The Gaucho's have a 2-8 overall record entering the tournament. They have secured wins over Utah State on Feb. 11 and North Dakota State on Feb. 12.

UCSB returns key player Madelyn McNally to the lineup this season. Over six games, McNally has gone 6-of-17 posting a .353 batting average and a .412 slugging percentage. The Gaucho's Camryn Snyder has earned two victories this season in the circle pitching 31.0 innings.

SCOUTING BOISE STATE
The Broncos are currently 9-1 on the season after playing in the SDSU Season Kickoff and the Cardinal Invitational. On Sunday, Feb. 20, the Broncos defeated UMass, 11-3, in six innings.

Boise State's Alycia Flores enters the Gaucho Classic going 18-of-35 with a team-best .514 batting average. Serena Huchingson has recorded 12 hits with a .429 batting average.

Taylor Caudill and Hannah Bailey have made an impact in the circle, pitching 22.2 and 27.2 innings, respectively. Caudill has only allowed two runs while striking out 38 batters. Bailey has posted a 0.76 ERA while only allowing two runs and striking out 32 batters.

ON DECK
The Friars will host Boston College on Wednesday, March 2 at 2:00 p.m. on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. in their home opener. Providence will then travel to Towson, Md. to compete in the DeMarini Tiger Clash from March 4 – March 6.
