No. 24 Men’s Soccer Welcomes Xavier For BIG EAST Home Opener

Kick-Off is set for Saturday, September 25 at 1:00 PM in Providence, R.I.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The No. 24 Providence College men's soccer team (5-1-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) will host Xavier University on Saturday, September 25 in the team's BIG EAST home opener on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The Friars enter the weekend having won three straight matches against Loyola University Maryland, 3-1(Sept. 10), No. 19 Seton Hall (Sept. 18), 3-2, and notched a 3-0 win against Brown (Sept. 22).

Scouting the Musketeers…  The Musketeers have opened the 2021 campaign with a record of 6-2-0 (0-1-0 BIG EAST). Xavier is coming off a loss in its BIG EAST opener against St. John's, where the team lost 1-0 on Sept. 18. To close out their non-conference schedule, the Musketeers went three-straight games without allowing a goal. Sophomore Jerome Jolly (Garstang, England) and Karsen Henderlong (Crowd Point, Ind.) each having scored three goals apiece to lead the Xavier offense. Graduate student Matthew Rosenberg (Manalapan, N.J.) has notched four clean sheets in the team's first eight games in the season. Rosenburg holds a .728 save percentage over his career. 

 
Scouting the Friars… The Friars opened BIG EAST play with a win on the road against No. 19 Seton Hall, the 2020 BIG EAST Champions. The Friars are coming off a 3-0 victory against cross-town rival Brown at Stevenson-Pincince Field on September 22. The Friars are led in scoring by sophomore Brendan McSorley (Randolph, N.J.), who tallied five goals and one assist in his seven appearances on the season. The Friars' high-powered offense has had 11 goal scorers in its seven games including five players who have scored multiple goals. The Friars are currently averaging 14 shots per game and have a shots on goal percentage just above 50%. Be sure to expect lots of action in the Friars attacking third.
 
Friars against ranked opponents…  The Friars have played three of their seven games in the 2021 season against ranked opponents and hold a 2-1-0 record. On Aug. 26th, they hosted No. 23 Fordham and posted a 3-0 victory. On Sept. 3rd the Friars travelled to No. 14 New Hampshire, where they lost 2-1. On Sept. 18, the Friars opened conference play with a win at No. 19 Seton Hall, 3-2.
 
Friars' Newcomers
 
The Friars' roster includes nine incoming freshman and two transfers for the 2021 fall season. Cole Dewhurst (Lancaster, Mass.), Thomas Tulgar (Bergenfield, N.J.), Colton Madeira (Taunton, Mass.), Austin Rome (Bowie, Md.), Alec Lowe (Rutheford, N.J.), Nathan Lagoa (Rehoboth, Mass.), Noah Smith (Matthews, N.C.), Diego Garcia (Wilmington, Mass), and Colby Campos (Swansea, Mass.) make up the incoming freshmen. The Friars' also welcome Simon Triantafillou (Ontario, Canada), a transfer from Syracuse University, and Miguel Candela (Caceres, Spain), a transfer from Franklin Pierce University.
