Softball Drops Two Games To Regional-Foe Boston University

Friars will open BIG EAST Conference action with a three-game series against Creighton on March 12-13.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team fell to Boston University in a double-header on March 8 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The two teams met for a second-straight day, having split a pair of games on March 7. Today, the Terriers earned a 10-0 victory in the opening game, and also came out on top in the nightcap, 8-3.
 
GAME 1 NOTES:
• The Friars fell to Boston University, 10-0, in the first game of the double-header.
• Four fielding errors led to three of the Terriers' 10 runs.
• The Terriers put up two runs in the third inning and followed with one in the fifth, three in the sixth and four in the seventh.
• Providence threatened in the bottom of the seventh as Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) led off with a walk. 
Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.) also reached on a walk with one out in the inning, pushing Tomaso to second base. 
Gianna Magrino (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) also reached on a walk, loading the bases with two outs, but the Friars were unable to capitalize as Mairead O'Sullivan (Grafton, Mass.) grounded out to third base to end the game. 
• Providence recorded two hits in 22 at-bats, leaving six runners on base during the game.
• O'Sullivan and Madi Traver (Irving, Texas) were the lone Friars to register hits. O'Sullivan earned the second extra-base hit of her career with a double to center in the third inning. 
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calf.) got the start in the circle and went five innings, giving up three hits and four earned runs. She allowed one walk and recorded six strikeouts.
• Ali Dubois went the distance for Boston University to earn the shut-out victory. She recorded five walks, seven strikeouts and allowed just two hits. 
 
GAME 2 NOTES:
• The Terriers swept the double-header with an 8-3 victory in game two.
• BU got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning as Emily Gant scored from second base on an error.
• The Terriers extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third.
• Providence responded four hits and three runs in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-3.
Tiana Wren (Glen Lyon, Pa.), Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) and Tomaso each recorded RBI singles in the third and Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.) notched her first extra-base hit as a Friar with a double.
• It remained a one-run game (4-3) until Boston University tacked on four more runs in the fifth to gain an 8-3 advantage on the scoreboard.
• Providence collected eight hits in the game from eight different players, compared to six hits for the Terriers. 
• Grifone got the start in the circle and went 4.2 innings. She allowed five hits, walked three batters and struck-out four Terriers. 
• Of the eight runs scored while Grifone was on the mound, six were unearned.
• The Friars committed three errors in the game.
Elysia Cunnigan (Corona, Calif.) pitched 2.1 innings of relief and held the Terriers scoreless, while striking out two batters.
• Dubois earned the win in relief, pitching 4.2 scoreless innings for Boston University. She gave up six hits, struck out three batters and issued one walk.
• Gant went 2-4 at the plate for BU and recorded two runs and two RBI, while Audrey Sellers went 1-3 with a homerun and two RBI.
 
UP NEXT:
• Providence will open BIG EAST Conference action with a three-game series against Creighton on March 12 and March 13. The Friars and Bluejays will play a double-header on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., followed by a single game on Saturday at Noon. The series will be played at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
