PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team opens up BIG EAST play this weekend with a three-game series at Glay Field against Creighton. The Friars and Bluejays will square off in a doubleheader (1/3 p.m.) on Friday before concluding the series at noon on Saturday.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars dropped three-of-four games to Boston University earlier this week, with freshman
Tori Grifone tossing a complete game shutout in a 2-0 win on Sunday afternoon.
Mairéad O'Sullivan leds the way for the Friars with a .375 batting average and .500 slugging percentage through four games. The junior has registered three hits in eight at-bats with a double and an RBI. University of Virginia transfer

Tori Grifone have three hits in 10 at-bats (.300)
Grifone leads the way in the circle for the Friars, starting two games and posting a 1.80 ERA. The freshman surrendered just three earned runs over 11.2 innings while striking out 11 Terriers.
The Friars welcome in six new members to the program for the 2021 season –
Natalie Orchard (Walla Walla, Wash.),
Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.),
Jacque Harrington (Bedford, N.H.), and
Lyndsey Evix (Cumberland, Md.). Providence also welcomes in transfers
Sarah Gunderson (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and
Madi Traver (Irving, Texas). Gunderson is a grad student who spent the previous four seasons at University of Rhode Island. Traver is a junior who played three seasons at the University of Virginia.
SCOUTING CREIGHTON:
The Bluejays enter the weekend at 4-4 overall in 2021. After getting swept in the season-opening series at Wichita State, Creighton responded by winning four-of-five games at the Saluki Invitational last weekend. The Bluejays defeated UIC twice, St. Louis and Northern Kentucky and dropping one game to host Southern Illinois.
Ashley Cantu has gotten off to a blazing start for the Bluejays this season, batting .519 with 14 hits, five runs and five RBI. Kailey Wilson leads the team with three home runs and nine RBI, while posting a .407 batting average and team-high .778 slugging percentage. Kiara Mills (.389), Sam Alm (.333), Madeline Vejvoda (.308) and Ryann Glenn (.300) round out the top six in batting average.
In the circle, Parker Boyd is 3-3 with a 5.25 ERA over four starts and 24 innings. Mikay Santa Cruz has started three times and has posted a team-best 4.32 ERA in 11.1 innings. Jena Lawrence is the other pitcher to start a game for the Bluejays this year, as she has posted a 5.60 ERA over four appearances and 10.0 innings pitched.

The Friars hit the road for the first time this season for a three-game BIG EAST series at DePaul next weekend (March 20-21) in Chicago, Ill.
