Women’s Track Shines At Stanford Invitational

Brianna Ilarda wins the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:50.42.

PALO ALTO, CALIF. - The Providence College women's track team competed in the Stanford Invitational on Friday, March 29 at Stanford University. The Friars had two runners finish in the top-three in their respective events.
Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Western Australia) highlighted the Stanford Invitational for the Friars in the Invitational heat of the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Ilarda took the lead from the gun and pushed a strong pace. She would go back and forth with another runner throughout the race until the last 1,200 meters. With 800 to go, Ilarda made a huge surge to gap the field and never looked back. She would go on to take the victory in a time of 9:50.42, running a six second personal best. Her time has qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the pastand her time currently stands as one of the top in the NCAA. This is the first time in the team's history that a Friar has won an event at the Stanford Invitational.
Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) was another highlight for the Friars in today's meet. Paladino competed in the Invitational heat of the 1,500 meters. The group remained tightly packed for the majority of the race, with Paladino positioned in the top five. The race picked up with 600 to go and Paladino went with the lead pack. She would go on to place third overall in a time of 4:16.82, which currently stands as one of the top times in the NCAA. Her time has qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round in the past as well.
Regan Rome (Dalla, Pa.) had a strong showing in the women's 10,000 meters. Rome placed second in her respective heat in a time of 33:26.39.
Providence College alumni Emily Sisson '14 won the Invitational heat of the 10,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational last night. Sisson ran a strong race from the gun, switching off the lead with her training partner Molly Huddle. Sisson would go on to win the race in a time of 30:49.57. Her time was a personal best and both a World and Olympic Qualifying Standard.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, April 12 to host the Ocean State Invitational in Providence, R.I. Events will begin at 4:55 p.m.
