Tomaso’s Walk-Off Hit Lifts Providence Over Rhode Island, 4-3

PROVIDENCE, R.I. Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) lifted the Providence College softball team over the University of Rhode Island, 4-3, on Wednesday, March 27 after hitting a walk-off double to left center field. Providence improves to 3-0 at home this season and 17-12 on the season.

HIGHLIGHTS:
- The Friars scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Providence started the inning with two singles from Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) and Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) to get on base. Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) hit a single up the middle to score Lee and Portillo after Portillo reached base on a fielder's choice.  Providence led 2-0 at the end of the first.
- The Rams scored their first run in the top of the second inning (2-1). Caleigh Holland hit a groundball to Portillo which allowed the runner on third to score.  
- Rhode Island gained a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning. The Rams had runners on second and third when Ari Castillo (Fresno, Calif.) hit a triple to right field to clear the bases.
- Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) tied the game in the bottom of the third inning (3-3) with a solo home run to left field. This was McCune's first home run of the season and fourth in her career.   
- Tomaso broke the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI double to left center field. Portillo walked to get on base before rounding the bases on Tomaso's hit.
- McCune started the game in the circle, pitching 2.1 innings while giving up three runs. Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) relieved McCune in the third, pitching the final 4.2 innings while earning the win. Alvarez struck out eight batters and gave up zero hits.

ON DECK:
Providence will be back in action at Glay Field against Creighton University for their first BIG EAST matchup at home. The Friars and the Bluejays will play in a three-game series starting off with a double header on Saturday, Mar. 30 at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The Friars will conclude the series with a game on Sunday, Mar. 31 at 11:00 a.m.
