Softball Welcomes Creighton For Three-Game Series

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will host the Creighton Bluejays for a three-game series this weekend on Saturday, March 30 and Sunday, March 31. The weekend will kick-off with a double header on Saturday, scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The teams will wrap up the series on Sunday with an 11:00 a.m. matchup. Providence holds a 17-12 overall record and is 1-2 in conference play. It marks Providence's first BIG EAST series at home this season on Glay Field.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
Providence is coming off two mid-week wins over Bryant (3-1) and Rhode Island (4-3), to improve to 17-12 on the season. The Friars hold a 1-2 record in the BIG EAST after playing three games against St. John's this past weekend.
 
Freshman Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) had a solid performance in her BIG EAST debut. She went 6-10 (.600) at the plate, starting all three games at St. John's. Nunez hit one home run, tallied three RBI and scored three runs. Senior Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) has a team-high .410 batting average with 34 hits on the season. Lee ranks second in the BIG EAST with her .410 average, behind Marissa Rizzi (.423) of St. John's. The Friars have a fairly balanced lineup, with seven players hitting over .275 this season. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) and Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) accompany Lee hitting over .300. McCune is hitting .333 with 13 hits, eight of which have gone for extra bases. She notched her first home run of the season on Wednesday, when she tied the game at 3-3 with a solo home run in the third inning.    
 
The pitching staff has played a key role in Providence's success through 29 games. Freshman Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) has had an impressive start to the season, posting a 1.91 ERA in 16 appearances to build a 9-4 record. She ranks first in the BIG EAST in ERA (1.91) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.92). Alvarez has struck out 72 batters in 84.1 innings of work, walking just 13. McCune has been Head Coach Jill Karwoski's second option in the circle, she is 6-4, with a 2.61 ERA. McCune has made 16 appearances, striking out 37 batters in 59 innings.
 
SCOUTING CREIGHTON:
The Bluejays are currently sitting at .500 with an 11-11 record, posting the second-most runs in the BIG EAST (4.76 per game). Similar to Providence, Creighton went 1-2 in their first BIG EAST series after traveling to Washington D.C. to take on Georgetown.
 
Kiara Mills opened the team's BIG EAST slate with seven RBI and three home runs against the Hoyas. She went 5-9 (.556) at the plate and started all three games. On the season, she ranks first on the team in batting average (.390), home runs (five) and RBI (18). Ashley Cantu and Mileah McKelvy have combined for 39 hits and 21 RBI to accompany Mills' success. Cantu is hitting .361 as she has started 21 of the team's 22 games, while McKelvy has started 21 games to post a .298 batting average and 13 RBI.     
 
The Bluejays have three pitchers who have started at least four games. Their top pitching options are Logan Black and Kiele Miller, Black has a 3.95 ERA and 2-6 record compared to Miller's 4.30 ERA and 5-2 record.
 
ON DECK:
Providence will travel to Brown University to play a single game on Wednesday, April 3 at 3:00 p.m. The Friars will then return to conference play with a three-game series at Villanova on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7.
