Softball Walks Off With Two Wins In BIG EAST Home Opener

The Friars improved to 3-2 in BIG EAST play and 19-12 overall.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team defeated the Creighton Blue Jays twice on March 30 in the Friars' BIG EAST home opener. Providence won both games with late game heroics, winning the first game, 4-3, in 12 innings and the second game, 5-3, after a walk-off grand slam by Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.). With the wins the Friars improve to 19-12 overall and 3-2 in BIG EAST play.
 
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS:
- Creighton scored first in the top of the second inning after a solo home run from Mikaela Pechar.
- Providence tied the game in the bottom of the second inning, 1-1, after a RBI single from Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) scored Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.).
- The Bluejays regained the lead, 2-1, in the top of the fourth inning after a RBI double plated Kaitlynn Hunt.
- The bases were loaded in the bottom of the fifth for Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.), San Antonio hit a fly ball to the shortstop that allowed Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) to tag up and score to deadlock the game at two runs apiece.
- Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) tallied another hit in the bottom of the fifth to give her three on the day.
- In the bottom of the sixth, Portillo hit a sacrifice fly to score Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) and give Providence a 3-2 advantage.
- The BlueJays responded in the top of the seventh with a solo home run from Kailey Wilson which tied the game for the third time, 3-3.
- San Antonio and Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) hit back to back singles in the bottom of the 12th to bring up Allison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.), Abbatiello hit a soft line drive that the second baseman failed to come up with. Compton rounded second on the error to earn the 4-3 win.
- Daniela Alverez (Santa, Ana, Calif.) started in the circle and pitched all 12 innings for the Friars. She was the pitcher of the record only allowing eight hits and three runs. Alverez tallied eight strikeouts and is now 10-4 this season.
 
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS:
- The bases were loaded in bottom of the first when the Friars took their first lead. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) was hit by a pitch that walked in Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) to give Providence a 1-0 advantage.
- The Bluejays scored off a single up the middle to tie the game, 1-1, in the top of the third inning.
- Creighton grabbed its first lead of the second game, 2-1, after a solo home run from Mileah McKelvy.
- Kailey Wilson hit a triple in top of seventh to lead off the inning and get in scoring position. Wilson scored on a RBI single from Ashley Cantu to extend the Bluejays lead to 3-1.
- The Friars loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back base hits from Lee and Hadley Tate (Yarmouthport, Mass.) and a walk for Portillo. Tomaso was up at bat with the bases loaded when she hit her third home run of the season, a walk-off grand slam to hand Providence its second win of the day, 5-3.
- Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) started in the circle and pitched all seven innings for the Friars. She was the pitcher of record allowing eight hits and three runs. McCune tallied six strikeouts and is now 7-4 in the circle this season.

The Providence Friars will be back in action to face the Creighton Bluejays tomorrow, March 31, at 11:00 a.m for the final game of the series.
