Softball Completes Series Sweep Against Creighton

The Friars are now 4-2 in BIG EAST play with the win and 20-12 overall.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team defeated the Creighton Blue Jays, 4-3, on Sunday, March 31 at Glay Field to improve to 5-0 at home this season. The Friars are now 4-2 in BIG EAST play and 20-12 overall.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Creighton tallied the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. Runners were on second and third when Kelli Finan grounded a ball to shortstop, Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) got the out at first before Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) fired to third for the tag to complete the double play. Sam Alm scored on the groundball to Portillo before they tagged out Ashley Cantu at third to take a 1-0 lead.
- The Friars tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning after Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) grounded a soft ball to the pitcher, who failed to make the play, allowing Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) to cross the plate.
- Providence loaded the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth before Creighton threw a wild pitch, bringing in Nunez to take a2 -1 advantage. The Friars earned two runs to extend their lead (4-1) after a two RBI double from Portillo to score Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) and Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas).
- The Bluejays adds two runs in the top of the sixth but the runs were not enough as Providence prevailed, 4-3. One run was scored on a fielder's choice before a RBI double down the third base line. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) relieved Daniela Alverez (Santa Ana, Calif.) with one out and runners on base.
- Alverez started in the circle and pitched 5.1 innings for the Friars. She allowed six hits and two strikeouts. Alvarez moved to 11-4 on the season with a 2.00 ERA. McCune pitched 1.2 innings and closed the game. She recorded her first save of the season.
