PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will travel to Clearwater, Fla. to compete in the USF-Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitationalon March 15-17. Providence will begin play against Columbia on March 15 at 11:45 a.m. followed by a matchup against Towson at 2:15 p.m. Day two will include games against Colgate at 11:30 a.m. and Florida A&M at 2:00 p.m. The team will conclude play on Sunday, March 17 with a 9:00 a.m. start against Lafayette.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars improved to a 10-7 overall record this past week after going 5-1 in the USF -Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase in Clearwater. Fla on March 8-10. The team defeated Furman, Central Michigan, Army, Saint Francis (Pa.) and Saint Joseph's while dropping a game against South Dakota State. Providence captured another win on March 13 against Colgate, winning 3-1. Â
Providence's offensive production has come from all levels of the lineup to this point, with seven players holding a .250 batting average or above.
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) leads the team with 17 hits and a .314 average and has added six RBI.
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) has started 16 games for the Friars, tallying 14 hits, five RBI and holds a .275 average starting at shortstop.Â
Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.),
Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) and
Hadley Tate (Yarmouthport, Mass.) have each contributed to the Providence offense. Each have started at least three or more games for the Friars and have combined for 14 runs, 17 hits and 13 RBI.

Freshman Daniela Alverez (Santa Ana, Calif.) has been the Friars' go-to option in the circle, holding a 6-2 record and leads the team in ERA (1.35). Alvarez has pitched a team high 51.2 innings, struck out a team-high 38 batters and holds opponents to a .223 batting average. She was named to the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Mar. 11.
Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) has been excellent in relief for the Friars. Murphy holds a 1.80 ERA, has pitched 11 innings and holds batters to a .188 average.
SCOUTING COLUMBIA:
The Columbia Lions opened the season with a 2-8 overall record. The Lions last played in the Purple and Gold Invitational on March 1-3 in Greenville, N.C. They went 0-5 on the weekend.Â
Max Ortega leads the team in hits (11) and batting average (.393). She has tallied four runs and five RBI at 28 at bats. Sommer Grzybek has been a strong compliment to Ortega's production, recording seven runs, 10 hits and seven RBI at 27 at bats.
Madison Canby has started five games for the Lions. Canby holds a 3.46 ERA and has only allowed 15 runs. She has struck out 12 batters in 26 innings of work. Columbia's second pitching option is Alexa Pinarski, who has recorded an ERA of 7.67 and tallied six strikeouts.
SCOUTING TOWSON:
The Towson Tigers hold a 9-7 record on the season. Towson's last two matchups were double headers against UMBC and George Washington University on March 12-13. The Tigers went 2-0 against UMBC and 1-1 against George Washington University.Â
The trio of Julia Smith Harrington, Kendall Arcia and Nicole Stokinger lead the Tiger's offense, all batting over .300. Harrington posts the Tiger's highest batting average of .424. Arcia and Stokinger have started all 16 games, combining for 30 hits, 25 runs and 28 RBI. Arcia leads the team in RBI (16) and Stokinger leads the team in homeruns (5).Â

Harrington has been Towson's go-to pitcher as she has started five games and recorded a 5-0 record on the mound. Harrington has tallied 37 strikeouts in 32 innings and holds a 0.44 ERA.

SCOUTING COLGATE:
Colgate started its Spring break trip falling to South Dakota State, Eastern Illinois, USC Upstate, Providence and South Florida. They captured two wins over the break against Toledo and Quinnipiac. The Raiders fell to 8-11 overall record after their five losses over the weekend.

Jordan Miller leads the team at the plate, tallying 23 hits and 14 RBI in 56 at bats to post a team-high .411 batting average. Meghan Romero and Rebecca Johnson are the other Raiders with a plus .300 average. Combined Romero and Johnson have recorded 41 hits, 16 runs and 13 RBI.

Jessica Hay and Bella Crow handle the work in the circle, combining to start 13 of the team's 19 games. Cow holds a 3.65 ERA and has tallied 21 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched. Hay has recorded a 3.59 ERA in 36 innings pitched.
SCOUTING FLORIDA A&M:
The Florida A&M Rattlers hold a 6-17 overall record. Most recently the Rattlers played in the FAU Softball Invitational on March 8-10 in Boca Raton, Fla. Florida went 2-2 on the weekend.

The duo of Alexis Day and Tyra Bowers lead the offense for the Rattlers'. Day has started all 23 games for Florida A&M and leads the team in batting average (.328) and RBI (12). Bowers has tallied nine runs, 21 hits and six RBI in 72 at bats for the Rattlers.

Kyaira Brown has been the lead pitcher for Florida A&M posting a 3.00 ERA. Brown has recorded 38 strikeouts and holds opponents to a .253 batting average in 84 innings pitched.   Â

SCOUTING LAFAYETTE:
The Lafayette Leopards opened the season with a 2-10 record. The Leopards last played a double-header against the University of Pennsylvania on March 13. They went 1-1 on the day. Â

Paige Grover leads the team in batting average (.317) and hits (13) thus far this season. Grover has tallied seven runs and four RBI. Erin Scott has been aiding the Lafayette offense leading the team in RBI (6) and posting a .235 batting average. Â

Kinzi Van Wyk has led the pitching staff, starting seven games in her eight appearances. Van Wyk has pitched 37 innings, recorded a 4.27 ERA and has held opponents to a .310 batting average.Â
