KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Providence College softball team fell to the UMass Minutewomen, 3-1, in their final game of the Diamond Nine Citrus Blossom Invitational on Sunday, Feb. 17 in Kissimmee, Fla. The Friars gained a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first inning but gave up three unanswered runs to close the game.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- UMass' offense proved to be too much at the plate, tallying nine hits to Providence's five, giving them a 3-1 win.
- Jessica Tomaso (Milford, Mass.) hit a double to left field that scored Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.), who was on second base, to give Providence their early 1-0 lead. The RBI double gave Tomaso her third RBI of the season.
- The Minutewomen gained their first lead of the day in the top of the third inning, UMass plated two on an RBI single and RBI double. Providence trailed 2-1 at the conclusion of the third inning.
- Danielle Ellis of UMass hit a ground ball to shortstop with a baserunner on second and third which scored Kaycee Carbone in the top of fifth inning. The insurance run gave UMass a 3-1 lead. Providence failed to score in the latter innings.
- Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas), Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.), Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) and Portillo each recorded singles to accompany Tomaso's RBI double.
- Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) earned the start in the circle and struck out five, she pitched five innings giving up eight hits. She was the pitcher of record and gave up two earned runs. Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) relieved Alvarez pitching the sixth and seventh inning. McCune gave up one hit.
- Providence falls to 4-6 on the season.
ON DECK
Providence will travel to Baltimore, Md. to play Central Connecticut State, Fairleigh Dickinson and Morgan State through March 2-3.
