CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Providence College softball team swept day one in the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase on March 8 by defeating Furman, 5-4, and Central Michigan in game two by a score of 5-0.
GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Providence was tied 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning before
Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) propelled the Friars over the Paladins with a two-out RBI single to hand the Friars a 5-4 victory.
- The Friars struck early in the top of the first inning, scoring three runs on four hits.
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) doubled to center field before
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) brought her home with an RBI double down the right field line. Furman had a chance to get out of the inning on a ground ball to third base off the bat of
Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Penn.), however, Portillo scored on a throwing error by the third baseman. San Antonio increased the lead to three in the opening inning after singling to left field to plate Compton.
- Furman scored three unanswered runs through the third and fourth inning to knot the game at 3-3. The Paladins scored one off a throwing error followed by a sac fly to round out their scoring in the third. Taylor Vahle belted a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.
- Both sides traded runs in the sixth inning to keep the game at a stalemate.
Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) crossed the plate after
Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) grounded out. Furman scored on a wild pitch to head to the seventh with a 4-4 game.
- San Antonio brought in the winning run in the top of the seventh inning after hitting her second RBI single of the day.
Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) closed out her first complete game of the season to improve her record to 2-1.
- McCune gave up seven hits over seven innings, allowing three earned runs. She struck out five and walked zero.
- Compton, San Antonio and McCune each tallied two hits while
Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas), Lee and Portillo recorded one hit apiece.
GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- Freshman
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) pitched a one-hit complete game shutout to defeat Central Michigan, 5-0.
- Providence entered the scoring column first in the top of the third inning. Villani reached on an error before Lee brought her home with an RBI single.
- The game remained 1-0 in favor of the Friars until the top of the fourth inning when the team extended their lead to 5-0. San Antonio and
Jackie Martin (Bridgeton, N.J.) each tallied singles while Nunez was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Hadley Tate (Yarmouthport, Mass.) pinch hit for
Annie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.) and hit a grand slam. Neither team could muster any runs in the latter innings.
- Alvarez earned her fourth win of the season in her team-high third complete game.
- Lee recorded two hits while San Antonio, Martin and Tate recorded the other three.

Providence will continue play in Clearwater, Fla. tomorrow with a matchup against Army at 9:30 a.m. and Saint Francis at 12:00 p.m.
