PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team will travel to Clearwater, Fla. to compete in the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase on March 8-10. Providence will begin play against Furman University on March 8 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a matchup with Central Michigan at 3:00 p.m. Day two will include games against Army at 9:30 a.m. and Saint Francis (Pa.) at 12:00 p.m. The team will conclude play on Sunday, March 10 with a 9:00 a.m. first pitch against South Dakota State followed by an 11:15 a.m. game against Saint Joseph's.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:
The Friars have started the season with a record of 4-6. They opened the season going 3-2 in the River City Leadoff Tournament in Jacksonville, Fla., where they defeated Georgia Tech of the ACC, twice. Providence is currently coming off the D9 Citrus Blossom Tournament in which they went 1-4 in Kissimmee, Fla. The Friars were scheduled to play in the Morgan State tournament this past weekend but all games were cancelled due to inclement weather.
Providence's offensive production has come from all levels of the lineup to this point, with five players holding a .250 batting average or above.
Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) leads the team with 11 hits and a .314 average, and has added four RBI.
Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) has started nine games for the Friars, tallying eight hits and holding a .296 average starting at shortstop. Freshmen
Skie Villani (Sugar Land, Texas) and
Lauren Nunez (Rowland Heights, Calif.) each started all 10 games for the Friars, combining for seven RBI and 14 hits.
Despite an 0-2 record,
Julia Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass.) leads the team in ERA (1.80) with 11.2 innings pitched. Freshman
Daniela Alvarez (Santa Ana, Calif.) has been the Friars' go-to option in the circle, holding a 3-2 record and 2.12 ERA. Alvarez has pitched a team high 29.2 innings and struck out a team-high 17 batters. She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Feb. 11 after earning two wins in the River City Leadoff, Alvarez worked 10.2 innings with a 2.62 ERA.
SCOUTING FURMAN:
The Furman Paladins opened the season with a 5-11 overall record. The Paladins recorded a 2-9 record in February before traveling to Clearwater, Fla., where they compiled a 3-2 record in the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Invitational.
Marissa Guimbarda leads the team in hits (17), RBI (20) and home runs (seven), while accumulating a .378 average. Guimbarda is one of only four players on the team to start all 16 games. Cammy Pereira has been a strong compliment to Guimbarda's production, with a .268 average at the plate and 11 hits.
Emily DeMonte has led the way in the circle, starting 11 of the team's 16 games. DeMonte won five of her 11 starts and holds a 5.25 ERA. She has struck out 26 batters in 66.2 innings of work. Furman's second pitching option is Mackense Greico, who has given up 49 earned runs in just 33 innings pitched. Greico has an 0-5 record in nine appearances.
SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN:
The Chippewas hold a 7-10 record in 2019. Central Michigan logged a 1-4 record in the College of Charleston Cougar Classic before picking up three-straight wins to open the Littlewood Classic against Utah State, Illinois State and San Diego. The team has dropped their last three against Penn State, South Dakota State and Penn.
The duo of Shaidan Knapp and Shannon Stein lead the Chippewas' offense, tied for a team-high .354 batting average. Knapp and Stein have started all 17 games, combining for 34 hits and 17 runs. Stein posts a team-high 15 RBI compared to Knapp's two. Tala Dean, Erika Underwood and Allison Curtis are also threats in the lineup, each hitting over .300 in at least 35 at-bats.
Central Michigan pitches by committee with five separate players making an appearance to start the season. Kaitlyn Bean has been their number one option, posting a team-low 4.09 ERA. Samantha Howell is right behind Bean with a 5.08 ERA. Cloe Mallory and Haley John have also picked up wins for the Chippewas.
SCOUTING ARMY:
Army has posted a 5-10 overall record up to this point in the season. The team has played in the Mercer Invitational, CSUN Early Bird Classic and Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Grace Mattimore has led the Black Knights at the plate, accumulating a .417 average while adding a team-high 13 RBI. Six of her 10 hits have gone for extra bases with a team-high three home runs and three doubles.
Jolie Duong leads the pitching staff in her 11 appearances. Duong started seven of the team's 15 games and posted a 3.93 ERA in 57 innings pitched.
SCOUTING SAINT FRANCIS (Pa.):
The Red Flash hold an 8-10 overall record. Most recently Saint Francis went 1-3 in the Easton Crimson Classic, picking up a win against Southern Mississippi before dropping two against Michigan State and one against Alabama.
The starting lineup stays consistent for Head Coach Jessica O'Donnell, as six of nine players have started all 18 games. Hayley Norton is their main threat at the plate, holding a .491 average with a team-high 27 hits in 55 at-bats. Norton also leads the team in home runs (six), RBI (22) and total bases (51).
Four separate players have made appearances for the Red Flash in the circle, with each pitcher starting at least three games. Christina Clark and Mikayla Bower have started six games while Meadow Uncapher started three, posting a team-low ERA of 2.69.
SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA STATE:
The South Dakota State Jackrabbits have started the season with a 14-4 overall record. The Jackrabbits picked up four-straight wins against Central Michigan, St. John's, Detroit Mercy and Western Michigan on Mar. 5-6 in Clearwater, Fla.
Ali Herdliska leads the Jackrabbits with a .453 batting average and 24 hits. Herdliska has hit five home runs and tallied 23 RBI so far this season.
Taylor Compton has led the pitching staff, starting eight games in her 11 appearances. Compton has pitched 47 innings, recorded a 6.13 ERA and has held opponents to a .251 batting average. Morgan DeMarais has started two games, pitching 26 innings and holds a 2.36 ERA.
SCOUTING SAINT JOSEPH'S UNIVERSITY:
The Saint Joseph's Hawks have started the season 6-2. The Hawks last played in the District Classic on Mar. 1-3, where they went 2-1.
Sarah Ostaszewski leads the Hawks with a .429 batting average and 28 hits. Ostaszewski has recorded five runs, 12 hits and three RBI. Molly Kapala holds a .259 batting average in 27 plate appearances. Kapala has recorded one home run and leads the team in RBI (7).
Saint Joseph's will pitch by committee between Amanda Herr and Ashley Ventura. Herr holds a 2.95 ERA and has pitched 21.1 innings. Ventura has recorded a 2.50 ERA and holds batters to a .233 batting average. She has pitched 33.2 innings and tallied 25 strikeouts.
ON DECK:
After the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase, Providence will play a mid-week game against Colgate on Wednesday, March 13. The Friars will then continue their play in Florida with matchups up against Columbia, Towson, Colgate, Florida A&M and Lafayette spanning from March 15-17 in the USF-Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitational.
