PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The No. 25 Providence College field hockey team defeated Merrimack, 5-1, in non-conference action on Sunday, Oct. 20 in Providence, R.I. It marked the Friars' fifth win in the last six games, as they improved to 10-5 on the year. Merrimack dropped to 2-12 on the season.
MATCH HIGHLIGHTS:
• The Friars scored at least one goal in each of the four quarters of regulation against the Warriors, and featured four different goal scorers.
• Junior
Sydney Cramer (Sciota, Pa.) gave Providence on the board with her third goal of the season at the 11:44 mark of the first quarter. She knocked home a rebound, unassisted, at the right post.
• Junior
Olivia Ward (Havelock North, New Zealand) put the Friars ahead, 2-0, with her first goal of the day at the 28-minute mark. Junior
Maddie Babineau (Milton, Ontario) was credited with the assist on the play as Ward put a hard shot into the upper left portion of the cage.
• Merrimack cut the deficit to 2-1 just 3:07 into the third quarter. Alex Mondini received a pass from Miranda Judd on the right side of the circle during a penalty corner and knocked home a shot into the lower left side of the cage.
• Providence closed the game with three unanswered goals en route to the 5-1 win.
• Babineau and freshman
Lisa McNamara (Barre, Vt.) each scored in the third quarter to make it a 4-1 contest.
• It marked Babineau's second goal of the season, as she converted a back-handed shot after collecting a loose ball off the Friars' initial shot that was blocked. The goal was unassisted and came at 39:15.
• McNamara, who got her first collegiate start in the midfield, also scored her first career goal for the Friars. Senior
Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) found McNamara all alone on the left side of the circle with a crossing pass at 44:32, and she was able to fire a hard shot into the far post.
• Ward closed the scoring with her second goal of the game, and fifth of the season, with just four seconds left on the clock. McNamara picked up a turnover and found Ward in the middle of the circle for the score.
• Providence led the Warriors in shots (32-5), shots on goal (21-2) and penalty corners (15-4). Ten of the Friars' 15 corners came during the third quarter.

WHAT'S NEXT:
The Friars will return to action on Friday, Oct. 25 against BIG EAST foe Georgetown. The game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The program will host Rider on Sunday, Oct. 27 in their final regular-season home game of the year at 1:00 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, the Friars will honor their senior class.
