Softball Takes Down Butler In Series Final

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. - The Providence College softball team played the final game of a three-game series against the Butler Bulldogs on Sunday, April 22. The Friars defeated the Bulldogs, 5-4, in eight innings. With the victory, Providence improves to 11-26 on the season and 5-9 in BIG EAST play.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Butler started the scoring early by jumping on the Friars for three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
- Providence evened the score at 3-3 in the top of the third.
- The Friars scored their first run when Julianne Rurka (Warrenville, Ill.) hit a double to score Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.). Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.) followed this up with a two-run homerun to score both herself and Rurka.
- Neither team could score again in the allotted seven innings, so the two teams went into extra innings.
- Providence wasted no time as they scored two runs in the top of the eighth. Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) drove in the first run by hitting a double to score Veler. Compton was then driven in when Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit an RBI single.
- Butler would score once in the bottom of the eighth but, ultimately, could not get the tying run across as Providence took the game 5-4.- Megan McCune (Orange, Calif.) pitched a complete game for Providence, going eight innings and allowing four runs and four hits while striking out seven. With the victory, she improved her season record to 3-6.
- Lee, Rurka, Veler, Compton and Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.) all hit doubles in the game.

ON DECK:
The Friars will travel to Boston to play their final away game of the season against the Boston University Terriers on Tuesday, April 24.
