Rachael Petrarca paced the PC offense with a two-run homer, three hits and two runs scored.
VILLANOVA, Pa. – The sixth-seeded Providence College softball team defeated the No. 5–Seed Butler, 7-0, in an elimination game in the BIG EAST Softball Championship on Thursday, May 8 at the Villanova Softball Complex in Villanova, Pa. Senior Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) spearheaded the Providence offense, launching a two-run home run in the fourth inning to cap off the scoring. She registered two additional hits and another run scored. The senior's home run marked her fourth of the season and 13th career.
GAME RECAP
· Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) opened the scoring with a two-run RBI single in the bottom of the first as the Friars jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
· Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.) extended the lead with an RBI single to score Douma (3-0).
· Kaelyn Loncharich (Yucaipa, Calif.) kept the Friars' momentum going courtesy of a two-run RBI single in the third to give the Friars a 5-0 lead.
· In the bottom of the fourth, senior Rachael Petrarca launched a two-run homer; her fourth of the season and 13th of her career.
· Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) pitched five 5.1 innings in the circle for Providence. The sophomore registered one strikeout and conceded only six hits. Senior Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) entered as a relief pitcher in the final inning. She struck out one while holding four batters hitless.
· The shutout marked the second of the season for the Friars, both coming against Butler as Providence earned a 10-0 win over the Bulldogs on March 15.
