VILLANOVA, Pa. – The sixth-seeded Providence College softball team upset top-seeded St. John's, 10-0, in a five-inning mercy rule decision in an Elimination Game in BIG EAST Softball Championship on Friday, May 9 at the Villanova Softball Complex in Villanova, Pa.
GAME RECAP
- The Friars kicked off the night's scoring in the first. Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) reached on a fielding error to score Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) and Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.) fouled out to right field; Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) crossed the plate.
- The Friars ignited a six-run scoring drive in the second. Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) launched a solo home run to start. Smith added an RBI triple and Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) reached on a fielder's choice. Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.) capped off the inning with a three-run triple.
- PC continued to mount the scoring with two additional runs in the third highlighted by an RBI single by Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.).
- The Friars held the Johnnies scoreless across the next two innings to clinch a 10-0 win in five.
- Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) tossed a complete game for Providence. She held the Red Storm to only six hits.
- The Friars have now shut out two opponents this postseason, earning a 7-0 victory over no. 6-seed Butler on May 8.
- Elisa Smith recorded two hits, two RBI and one RBI and two runs scored. With her two hits tonight, she moves into second place all-time for a Friar in single-season hits (66). Smith is now fourth all-time in runs scored in a single-season (41).
ON DECK
The No. 6-seeded Friars will make their first BIG EAST Semifinal appearance since 1994; where they went on to win their lone Championship title. Providence will take-on fourth-seeded Creighton at 1:30 p.m. on BEDN.
