VILLANOVA, Pa. – The sixth-seeded Providence College softball team was defeated by the No. 2–Seed Connecticut Huskies, 5-4, in the Quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Softball Championship on Thursday, May 8 at the Villanova Softball Complex in Villanova, Pa. Sophomore Cameron Dunn led the Friars with a RBI single and one run scored on a 2-3 effort at the plate.  

GAME RECAP 
  • Dunn got the Friars on the board in the first with an RBI single that plated Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.).  
  • The Huskies took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer and a sac fly. 
  • UConn's Cat Pettys added a solo home run for the Huskies in the third (4-1). 
  • The Friars came alive in the fifth inning, scoring two runs; one on a fielding error and the other courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) (4-3).  
  • Emma Eichten (Alamo, Calif.) tied the score at 4-4 in with a sac fly in the top of the sixth. Dunn crossed the plate.  
  • The Huskies swiftly regained the lead with an RBI double in the bottom half of the sixth (5-4).  
  • The Friars were unable to find the answer in the seventh.  
  • Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) and Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) split time in the circle for the Friars. Twomey, the pitcher of record, conceded only one earned run and three hits across 14 at-bats.

Providence will play in an elimination game against No. 6-Seed Butler today (May 8) at 6:00 p.m. on BEDN.
