Softball Heads To Villanova For Final Regular Season Series

The Friars will play the Wildcats in a three-game set from May 2-4.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Friars will head to Villanova, Pa., to close out the regular season with a three-game series against the Wildcats from May 2-4. The series opener is set for May 2 at 3:00 p.m., followed by game two on May 3 at 12:00 p.m. The series finale will take place on March 4 at 12:00 p.m., with all games available for viewing on FloCollege. 
 
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE 
Providence enters the series with a 22-26 overall record and an 11-10 mark in BIG EAST play. The Friars are coming off a 2-1 loss to crosstown rival Brown on April 30. The Friars set a new program record for stolen bases in a single season (47) in the game against the Bears.  
Junior Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) and sophomore Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.) continue to lead the Friars offensively, batting .388 and .354, respectively. Smith paces the team with 57 hits, 36 runs scored and a .471 on-base percentage, while Dunn holds a team-best .615 slugging percentage, along with 35 RBI and eight home runs.  
Graduate student Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) leads the Friars' pitching staff with a 3.47 ERA and a 10-8 record. She has totaled 62 strikeouts while allowing 52 earned runs across 105 innings this season. Last week, Grifone finished with a 2-0 record and posted a 1.27 ERA across 11 innings. She held opponents to a .132 batting average and only two earned runs.  
   
SCOUTING VILLANOVA  
Villanova enters the matchup with a 24-24-1 overall record and a 12-9 mark in BIG EAST play. The Wildcats are currently on a four-game losing streak after dropping a three-game set at St. John's and falling to Lehigh, 9-8, on April 30.  
 
Senior Ava Franz leads the lineup in hits (55), RBI (42), batting average (.357), runs scored (40) and on-base percentage (.447). Sophomore Maranda Runco follows with a team-high 14 home runs and a .700 slugging percentage.  
 
Junior Kat Gallant leads the pitching staff with an 11-9 record and a 3.51 ERA. She has recorded a total of 94 strikeouts this season and currently holds a .290 batting against average.  
 
ON DECK  
The Friars are looking to qualify for the BIG EAST Championship for the first time since 2019.
