Softball Splits BIG EAST Doubleheader With UConn

Rachael Petrarca led the Friars to a game one win with a two-run triple.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College softball team split a doubleheader against Connecticut (23-14, 10-4 BIG EAST) on Friday, April 11, at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars moved to 16-22 overall (9-8 BIG EAST). Providence secured a 4-1 win in the opening match before falling, 17-6, in game two. Senior Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) paced the Friars in game one, going 2-of-3 at the plate and adding a two-run triple to secure the win in the opener.

GAME ONE NOTES  
  • The Huskies opened the scoring in the top of the first, capitalizing on a passed ball to take a 1-0 lead. 
  • Providence responded in the fourth inning when Emma Douma (Midland Park, N.J.) drove in Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.) with an RBI single to even the score at 1-1. 
  • The Friars pulled ahead in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run inning. Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) reached on a fielder's choice to bring in the go-ahead run, followed by an RBI triple from Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) that extended the lead. Providence held off the Huskies the rest of the way to secure the 4-1 victory. 
  • Petrarca finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. 
  • Graduate student Tori Grifone (Sussex, N.J.) pitched a complete game for the Friars to earn her seventh win of the year. She allowed just five hits and one earned run while recording three strikeouts.  
 
GAME  TWO NOTES 
  • Connecticut jumped out to an early lead, scoring once in the first inning and adding three more in the second to go up 4-0. 
  • The Huskies tacked on another run in the third and a solo home run in the fourth to extend their advantage to 6-0. A five-run fifth inning pushed the lead to 11-0. 
  • Providence responded with a five-run rally in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single from shortstop Emma Douma, cutting the deficit to 11-5. UConn answered with another run in the bottom half of the inning to make it 12-5. 
  • The Friars added a sixth run on a bases-loaded walk to pull within 12-6, but the Huskies capped off the scoring with five runs in the seventh to seal a 17-6 win. 
  • Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.), Alannah Hopkins (Sylva, N.C.) and Emily Jonte (Alamo, Texas) all spent time in the circle for the Friars. 
 
ON DECK 
The Providence College softball team will close out the three-game series with UConn on Sunday, April 13 on Glay Field. First pitch is set to be thrown at 1:00 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
