PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College softball team split two games in a doubleheader against Rhode Island (7-16, 2-4 A10) on Tuesday, March 25, on Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars earned a 10-1 victory in five innings in the opener, before falling, 5-4, in agame two. PC moved to 11-17 overall. Senior
Rachael Petrarca (Tampa, Fla.) spearheaded the Friar offense in game one, hitting two home runs and collecting three RBI. She finished with four hits and three runs scored on the night.
GAME ONE NOTES
- The Friars jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first highlighted by a two-run RBI triple by Cameron Dunn (Bothell, Wash.).
- Rhode Island answered with a home run in the second inning (4-1).
- With two outs and two strikes on the board, Petrarca drilled in a solo home run to extend the Friars back to a four-run lead in the second (5-1).
- Sofia Peterson (Bordentown, N.J.) was able to score on a steal attempt by Kaelyn Loncharich (Yucaipa, Calif.) in the bottom of the third (6-1).
- Petrarca hit her second home run of the night to send home Gabriella Lee (Belmont, Calif.). The Friars led, 8-1.
- Brianna De La Fuente (Metuchen, N.J.) smashed a two-run walk-off solo home run in the fifth to call the game. The Friars won, 10-1.
- Petrarca finished 3-3 at the plate with three RBI and three runs scored.
- Alyssa Twomey (Warwick, R.I.) pitched a complete five innings for the Friars. The sophomore registered four strikeouts while holding URI to only three hits and one earned run.
GAME TWO NOTES
- The Rams opened the scoring in the first on an RBI double and a two-run home run (3-0).
- Lea Kosinski (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to kick off the Friars' scoring. Elisa Smith (Glen Allen, Va.) ensued with an RBI triple to close the gap to 3-2 in the second.
- Rhode Island added two more runs in the fifth to bring its lead to 5-2.
- Hanna Aldrich (Taunton, Mass.) was hit by a pitch on a bases-loaded play to cut the deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth.
- The Friars were able to add another run in the seventh but were unable to close the gap. Providence fell, 5-4.
- Riley Quirk (Holden, Mass.) and Jessica Walter (Middletown, Del.) split tine in the circle. The two pitchers combined for seven strikeouts while conceding eight hits and five earned runs.

The Friars will travel to Queens, N.Y. to take on BIG EAST foe, St. John's, in a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. with all games streaming on FloCollege.
