PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team defeated Stonehill, 3-0, in non-conference action on Friday, Sept. 6 at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Skyhawks dropped to 1-2 on the year. Graduate student
Ally DeCoste (Braintree, Mass.) tallied two goals in the victory.
GAME FLOW:
• Stonehill had the first two chances at a scoring opportunity in the first quarter, but both attempts were turned away by
Asia Porter (Somerset, Mass).
• The Friars took a 1-0 lead with 4:05 remaining in the first quarter as DeCoste scored off a feed from sophomore
Carly van Benten (Ashburn, Va.).
• The Friars were awarded a penalty stroke with 12:08 remaining in the third quarter, but senior
Cami Crook's (Somerset, Mass.) attempt was saved by Stonehill's goalkeeper, Shannon Conte. Providence maintained it's one-goal lead.
• DeCoste gave the Friars a 2-0 edge on the scoreboard several minutes later as senior
Bella DelNegro (Sterling, Mass.) fed the ball ahead in transition to give DeCoste a breakaway goal (36:34).
• Crook got a second scoring opportunity at the 55:28 mark in the fourth quarter during an offensive corner. She converted her first tally of the season on a direct shot, assisted by sophomore
Bo Martina (Nieuw Vennep, Netherlands)) and graduate student
Marley Mailloux (Hampstead, N.H.).
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• DeCoste recorded the third multi-goal game of her career and has a team-best three goals on the season.
• DelNegro, who was the team's assist leader in 2023, notched her first assist of the season vs. Stonehill.
• Crook's goal marked her first of the season and third of her career.
• Van Benten's assist on the Friars' opening goal of the game marked her first career point.
• Porter made three saves in goal and earned her first shut-out victory of the season and eighth of her career as a Friar.
• Stonehill outshot the Friars 2-1 in the first quarter, but Providence held a 13-4 shot advantage over the final three quarters to finish the game with a 14-6 edge overall.
• Providence held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal and both teams completed the game with eight penalty corners.

• The Friars return to action on Sunday, Sept. 8 against No. 12 Michigan. The game will be played at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at Noon.
