Field Hockey Set To Host Stonehill And No. 12 Michigan

Friars begin weekend slate of games on Friday, Sept. 6 against Stonehill at 3:00 p.m.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey team will play a pair of non-conference games this weekend at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. versus Stonehill and 12th-ranked Michigan. The Friars welcome the Skyhawks on Friday, Sept. 6 at 3:00 p.m., and close the weekend with the nationally-ranked Wolverines on Sunday, Sept. 8 at Noon.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE (1-1):
• The Friars enter the weekend with a 1-1 overall record. Providence fell to Boston University, 3-0, in the season opener on Aug. 30 in Providence, R.I. The Friars defeated Bryant, 2-1, on Sept. 1 in Smithfield, R.I.
• The win vs. Bryant marked Head Coach Diane Madl's 200th victory at Providence.
• Graduate student Ally DeCoste and senior Bella DelNegro each tallied goals vs. Bryant. DelNegro scored the game-winning goal with 9:02 remaining in regulation. 
• Sophomore Florencia Talarico and senior Celia Preveza each recorded one assist in the win vs. the Bulldogs.
• Providence College posted a 10-8 overall record in 2023, including a 3-4 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.
• The Friars returned 17 players from the 2023 campaign, including eight players with substantial experience in the starting line-up.
• Of the 25 active players on the roster, the team is comprised of five graduate students, six seniors, two juniors, seven sophomores and five freshmen.
• As a team, the Friars scored 44 goals last year. It marked the most goals in a season since 2014 (66).
• The Friars return four players who registered double digits in the points column last season, including their top two scorers in DeCoste and Preveza. DeCoste recorded 21 points on nine goals and three assists, while Preveza notched 16 points on six goals and four assists.
• DeCoste ranks tied for 47th on the Friars' all-time scoring list (36 points) and tied for 35th all-time in goals scored (15).
• DelNegro was the Friars' assist leader last season (seven). She recorded 11 points overall on two goals and seven assists.
• Graduate student Asia Porter has been the starting goalkeeper during each of the last three seasons. Last season, she helped backstop the Friars to a total of six shutout victories. She logged 1,093 minutes in the cage and posted a 1.59 goals against average and 0.736 save percentage.
• Through two games in 2024, Porter is 1-1 and has compiled a 1.52 goals against average and 0.625 save percentage.
• The Friars picked up two graduate transfers during the offseason, including Caroline Guden (Stanford) and Ally Kennedy (Vermont), both of whom are Massachusetts natives. Guden is from Waltham, Mass. and is the niece of former Friar great, Cathy Guden '94, who was a three-time All-American for the Friars. Kennedy is from Watertown, Mass. and is the sister of current Providence assistant coach Kourtney Kennedy
• Talarico was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team on Aug. 27. She is one of three sophomores to earn a spot on the preseason team. Last year, Talarico claimed BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and All-BIG EAST Second Team accolades. She became the third freshman in program history to earn the league's top rookie honor, joining Manon van Weezel (2017) and Paula Wagoner (1994).
• Talarico finished her freshman season with 10 points on two goals and six assists. She ranked second on the team in assists. In 2024, she has recorded one assist through two games.
 
SCOUTING STONEHILL COLLEGE (1-1):
• Stonehill enters the weekend with a 1-1 overall record.
• The Skyhawks fell to Holy Cross, 3-1, in the season opener on Aug. 30 and picked up their first victory of the season on Sept. 4 against Central Michigan (4-2).
• Tyra Stark leads the offense with six points on three goals. 
• Emma McGrory and Makayla Strickulis each have scored one goal.
• Shannon Conte has played 120 minutes in the cage for Stonehill and has recorded a 2.5 goals against average and a 0.500 save percentage.
• Last season, Stonehill compiled a 5-13 overall record.
 
SCOUTING #12 UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN (1-1):
• Michigan enters the weekend with a 1-1 overall record, having faced back-to-back nationally ranked opponents to start the season.
• Michigan is currently ranked No. 12 in the NFHCA Division I Coaches Preseason Poll.
• The Wolverines fell to No. 2 North Carolina, 4-1, on Aug. 30. Michigan rebounded for a 2-1 victory over No. 18 Wake Forest on Sept. 1.
• Abby Tamer leads the offense with three points on one goal and one assist.
• Kate McLaughlin and Julette Manzur have each scored one goal for Michigan through two games.
• Michigan has scored two of its three goals this year in the third quarter.
• Hala Silverstein has played 118 minutes in the cage for Michigan and owns a 2.04 goals against average and a 0.636 save percentage.
